Despite enrolling at Division I Hofstra University, Casey Grugan was not completely sold on his college decision.
As the final days of summer approached, Grugan reflected on his interactions with men’s lacrosse Head Coach Steve Colfer and thought that Cabrini might be a better fit.
Not only did he and Colfer build a relationship by talking about Grugan’s life off the field, he knew and had played with several Ridley High alums who would also suit up for the Blue and White.
Grugan’s decision paid off in a way that few could have imagined, as he developed into not only one of the top players in Cabrini men’s lacrosse history, but one of the nation’s best.
Grugan’s numbers speak for themselves.
In 76 career games, Grugan totaled 334 points on 206 goals and 128 assists. His 334 points ranks first in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) history, 14th in Division III history and 25th in the history of the NCAA.
His name is also listed in the NCAA record book as the player with the longest goal scoring streak in NCAA history, a span of 73 games.
A three-time United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-American, Grugan became the program’s first First Team All-American in 2010.
Grugan also collected three consecutive CSAC Player of the Year awards and stands as one of just two players in conference history to earn both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors.
Grugan credits many of his coaches and teammates for helping build his successful career. While his coaches called specific plays for the offense, they also allowed him to read the game and be creative, which better suited his playing style.
The talent and intelligence levels of his teammates also played a major role in his success. During his four years in the Blue and White, Grugan shared the field with four players who also hold spots in the top 10 of the program’s all-time scoring list.
