RADNOR, Pa. – Cabrini College Director of Athletics & Recreation Joe Giunta announced today that the men and women's track & field programs will be discontinued as a varsity sport, effective at the conclusion of the 2010 outdoor seasons.
“We thoroughly examined our department and all of the athletic programs offered at Cabrini College and have decided to discontinue men and women's indoor and outdoor track & field,” Giunta said. “We reached this difficult decision looking at the diminishing number of participants, the lack of any track & field facilities on campus and the fact track & field is not offered as a conference sport.”
Giunta met with the men and women's track & field coaching staff and student-athletes prior to announcing the decision. Interim head coach Tom O'Hora will remain head coach for the men and women's cross country programs.
“The Athletic Department staff spent months reviewing this decision and ultimately determined that instead of offering a sport where the student-athlete experience cannot be provided as Cabrini College has grown to expect, it is more beneficial to reallocate funds to remain highly competitive in all of our programs that we offer,” Giunta said.
The discontinuation of men and women's track & field reduces the number of varsity athletic teams at Cabrini from 18 to 16.
