EASTON, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's tennis team overcame a difficult start to reach the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tournament final for the seventh time in eight years. The Cavaliers rallied to defeat Marywood University 5-4 at the Northwood Racquet & Fitness Club in Easton, Pa.
The Cavaliers found themselves in a hole after dropping the first two doubles matches.
At number one doubles, sophomores
Katie Kennedy and
Adriana Scotto lost 8-5 to Marywood's Melissa Hudock and Carly Leitzel. Cabrini's number two team of senior
Alexis DiCamillo and freshman
Samantha Trumbo fell to Megan Nastelli and Kara Hoff by the same 8-5 score.
At number three doubles, Cabrini's duo of senior
Michelle Lettmann and sophomore
Victoria Nastala came up big, defeating Lindsay Burke and Beth Schneider 9-8, taking the tiebreaker 7-4. Lettmann and Nastala's victory gave the Cavaliers some momentum as the match changed over to singles play.
When these teams met on October 8, the Cavaliers maintained 2-1 advantage after the doubles matches. The Pacers rallied to take four singles matches, ultimately winning the match 5-4. Cabrini had seen the blueprint for the comeback.
Kennedy started the charge at number one singles defeating Hoff 6-1, 6-1. At number two singles, Marywood's Leitzel beat DiCamillo 6-2, 6-0.
Lettmann remained unbeaten this season in singles play, defeating Burke 6-1, 6-2. Scotto downed Schneider 6-2, 6-3.
Trumbo and Nastala faced difficult three set matches at the five and six positions. Trumbo fell to NAstelli 64, 4-6, 6-4, while Nastala aced Hudock 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
In the other semifinal, Gwynedd-Mercy College beat Baptist Bible College 5-0.
In a rematch of last year's final, Cabrini (12-2) will face No. 1 seed Gwynedd-Mercy on Saturday for the CSAC crown and the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
The Cavaliers and Griffins have met in five of the last six CSAC championship matches with each team taking two titles.
