PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Cabrini women's tennis team's 2013 season come to a close today, as the Blue and White fell to Marywood University 5-1 in today's Colonial States Athletic Conference semifinal round. With the loss, the Cavaliers drop to 9-6 on the year.
Today's loss also closes the career of seniors
Katie Kennedy and
Victoria Nastala. The duo combined for 166 total victories in singles and doubles and led the Cavaliers to three CSAC postseason tournaments, including the 2010 and 2011 CSAC championship matches.
The Cavaliers found themselves in a 2-1 hole after today's doubles matches. Kennedy and sophomore
Nicole Broccolino scored Cabrini's lone point, earning an 8-6 win at number one doubles. The victory improved the duo to 13-2 on the season.
At number two doubles, junior
Samantha Trumbo and freshman
Elena Conway dropped an 8-4 results, while Nastala and sophomore
Mia Scocozzo lost the number three doubles match 8-6.
The Blue and White hoped to turn the tide as the action moved to singles matches. Unfortunately, the Pacers won the first three completed matches to end the match. Trumbo suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss at number three singles, while Conway dropped a 6-0, 6-2 result at number four singles. At number six singles, Nastala lost 6-4, 6-2.
The Pacers (11-1) advance to Saturday's CSAC championship match, where it will face Gwynedd Mercy (16-2). The Griffins advanced with a 6-1 semifinal win over Immaculata. Saturday's championship is a rematch of the 2012 title match which Marywood won 5-3.
