RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer team stepped into the history books today, as it closed the regular season with a 5-0 victory over the visiting Notre Dame of Maryland University Gators.
With the win, the Cavaliers close the regular season 12-6 and extend their win streak to 10 matches.
The victory also improves the Blue and White to 11-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference, marking the first time since 1999 that Cabrini has posted an undefeated conference schedule.
Tonight's game also marked the final regular season appearance for the Cavaliers' six seniors,
Emily Dayton,
Danielle Kane,
Gabby Meck,
Devon Miller,
Melissa Scanzano and
Kaitlin Zisa.
One of the most successful classes in program history, this group has led the Cavaliers to 46 victories, including 34 CSAC wins and three CSAC championships. It joins Beaver College (1998-2000) as the only programs to win three consecutive CSAC/PAC titles.
In its 369 appearances in the Blue and White, the senior class has amassed 139 points on 51 goals and 37 assists.
The Blue and White controlled today's action from the opening whistle, outshooting the Gators 25-3. Meck led the Cavaliers with four shots, one more than Kane and junior
Kaitlyn Cooper.
All three of Cabrini's goaltenders, freshmen
Alivia Dietsch and
Crystal Auslander and sophomore
Marissa Jenkins, saw significant action in net, combining for the club's eighth shutout of the season.
Miller put the Blue and White ahead in the fifth minute, as she lofted a shot over the Notre Dame (Md.) goaltender that fell just inside the far post for her ninth tally of the season.
Meck recorded the first of her two assists on the day in the 13th minute when her corner kick service found junior
Meghan Martin for her seventh goal of the year. Freshman
Lisette Hrapmann's fourth goal of the season came in the 39th minute and sent Cabrini into its halftime Senior Day ceremony with a 3-0 lead.
Meck and Scanzano hooked up in the 54th minute, as Meck drove down the sideline and served a cross to Scanzano who recorded her fifth tally of 2014.
Freshman
Brittany Runyen found fellow rookie
Alex Petrongolo in the 78th minute for a breakaway, marking Petrongolo's first career goal.
As the top seed in next week's CSAC Tournament, the Cavaliers earned a bye through the first round and will host a semifinal match on Wednesday. Cabrini will face the lowest remaining seeded winner from Monday's quarterfinal round.
