WOOSTER, Ohio – The Cabrini men's basketball team struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the first half and couldn't recover, as the No. 20 Cavaliers dropped their season opener 97-80 as No. 10 College of Wooster.
Senior
Vinny Walls led the Cavaliers with 19 points, while fellow senior
Aaron Walton-Moss paired 16 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out.
Freshmen
Tyheim Monroe recorded 15 points and nine rebounds in his debut, while fellow rookie
Jair Green added 15 points.
The Blue and White struggled from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, connecting on just 34.3% shooting, including just 1-13 from three point range.
The Fighting Scots took advantage and used a pair of spurts to take control of the game. Wooster used a 15-2 run midway through the half to build a 14 point lead and a 13-3 spurt to extend its lead to 47-29 with 2:31 left in the first half.
For the game, the Blue and White connected on 33.8% of its field goal attempts, including 3-20 from three point range.
Wooster controlled the painted area, outscoring Cabrini 50-32 and building a 48-41 rebounding advantage. Fighting Scot Josh Kipfer had a big hand in the advantage, as the junior reserve posted 26 points and 15 rebounds.
The Cavaliers will return to Nerney Field House on Monday, as they host Eastern University in the annual Battle for Eagle Road doubleheader. The women's teams will open the action at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at approximately 8 p.m.
