Women's Soccer Falls to Misericordia in NCAA Tournament

DALLAS, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer season came to an end tonight, as the Cavaliers fell to No. 11 Misericordia University in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament.  The loss ends the Blue and White's season with a 14-7 record, tied for most wins in a season.  The loss also snaps Cabrini's win streak at a 12 matches.

The loss also closes the careers for the most successful senior class in program history.  Seniors Emily Dayton, Danielle Kane, Gabby Meck, Devon Miller, Melissa Scanzano and Kaitlin Zisa are the only class in CSAC women's soccer history to claim four consecutive conference crowns.

The ladies led the Cavaliers to 50 career wins, including a 23-4-6 mark in league matches.  The group combined for 142 points on 52 goals and 38 assists.

After a scoreless opening 30 minutes, the Cougars took the lead in the 30th minute, as Meghan Antrim scored the first of her two first half goals.  The second came in the 40th minute, as the Blue and White trailed 2-0 at the half.

The Cavaliers looked to mount a comeback as the second half started, recording two shots and two corner kicks in the first two minutes of the period, but could not find the right scoring combination.

Misericordia returned to the scorebook in the 61st minute, as Megan Mahoney netted her 20th goal of the season, breaking the program's single season goal record, a mark previously held by Cabrini assistant coach Cole Noll.

Karen Spehalski's 72nd minute tally sealed the win for the Cougars (18-2-1).

Juniors Meghan Martin and Dana Peterson led Cabrini with three shots each, while Miller and Scanzano added two each.  Freshman goaltender Alivia Dietsch notched eight saves in the loss.

Misericordia advances to Sunday's second round match, where it will  face the winner of tonight's second opening round match between Penn State Behrend (16-5-1) and Brandeis (12-4-2).
