SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Cabrini women's basketball team rebounded from Sunday's final minute loss, to score a convincing 59-42 win over Ithaca College in the final of its two games at the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico. The victory improves the Cavaliers to 7-3 to close the calendar year.
Senior
Amber Keys paired 19 points and 18 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the campaign. Junior
Meghan Martin added a season high 15 points on 6-8 from the floor, while senior
Megan Decker matched a season high with 10 boards to go with seven points.
The Blue and White used a dominant defensive performance to score the wire to wire win. Cabrini held the Bombers to just 32.7% shooting, including 1-11 from three point range, and forced 17 turnovers.
Ithaca's 42 points marks the club's least this season, a mark that fell 22 points below its season average.
Ithaca controlled the score board for opening 10 minutes of the action before Cabrini used an 8-0 spurt midway through the opening half to build its first lead of the afternoon.
A pair of three pointers by junior
Dana Peterson keyed another 8-0 run that put the Blue and White up 23-15 with 6:45 left in the first half and the Cavaliers never looked back.
Cabrini held a comfortable 33-24 lead after 20 minutes of action. The Cavaliers converted 10 offensive rebounds into 14 points and scored 10 points off 17 Ithaca turnovers in the first half.
The Blue and White showed no let up after the break, as its cushion grew to double figures in the opening minutes of the second stanza.
While the Bombers got as close as 37-30 at the 16:35 mark, the Cavaliers maintained its pressure, holding Ithaca to just 8-27 shooting including 0-6 from deep. Cabrini also kept Ithaca off the free throw line, as the Bombers made just three trips to the stripe in the second half, after averaging more than 18 trips per game on the season.
For the seventh time this season, the Cavaliers controlled the glass, outrebounding the Bombers 52-37, including a 19-3 advantage in offensive boards. The Blue and White tallied 18 second chance points on the day and added 22 points in the paint and 22 points off 17 Ithaca turnovers.
Samantha Klie led Ithaca (6-3) with nine points, while Ali Ricchuiti grabbed nine caroms in the loss.
The Cavaliers will enjoy a few days of relaxation before returning to work on January 5 when they welcome the Ursinus College Bears (3-6) to Nerney Field House. The Ball goes up at 6:30 p.m.
