Cavaliers Close Regular Season in Impressive Fashion

TOMS RIVER, N.J. – The Cabrini swim teams closed their regular seasons in impressive fashion today at Ocean County College.  The Blue and White women posted eight event victories en route to its 126-66 victory.  The men tallied six wins and a school record despite falling short 111-84. Of the meet's 22 events, the Cavaliers recorded top 10 times in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in 14 different events.

The duo of senior Breaghann Smith and freshman Christina Melchiorre led the Cabrini women with a pair of individual wins.  The senior won the 1,000 yard freestyle in 11:46.81 and the 500 yard freestyle in 5:48.91.

Melchiorre tallied victories in the 200 yard individual medley in 2:30.79 and the 100 yard freestyle in 58.44.  The duo also joined senior Courtney Good and junior Morgan Griffith to post a wining time of 4:02.99 to capture the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Griffith also won the 50 yard freestyle in 26.09, while Good captured the 100 yard backstroke, reaching the wall in 1:05.06.  Freshman Moira Prior added a pair of second place finishes on the day, posting times of 1:18.49 in the 100 yard butterfly and 1:22.54 in the 100 yard breast stroke.  Griffith, Good and Prior also joined freshman Meagan Kalinoski to claime the day's opening event, the 200 yard medley relay in a timeof 2:07.62.

On the men's side, freshman Todd Walker got the Cavaliers off to a good start as the rookie blasted his own 1,000 yard freestyle record.  Walker, who just three weeks ago cut two seconds off his previous mark, slashed nearly nine seconds from his record of 11:15.03, reaching the wall in 11:06.71.  Walker also placed second in the 100 yard butterfly, with a time of 57.90 seconds.

Junior Evan Strickland continued his strong season, capturing two more victories.  The junior won the 50 yard freestyle in 22.68 seconds and the 100 yard freestyle in 50.59 seconds.  Freshman Hassan David Goines Jr. added a victory in the 100 yard backstroke in 59.93 seconds and a second place finish in the 200 yard freestyle, with a time of 1:52.93.  

Walker, Goines, Strickland and sophomore Chris Ryan closed the day with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay, posting a winning time of 3:27.45.

The Cavaliers will have a two week break from competition, as they prepare for the 2014 AMCC Championship meet.  The three day event is scheduled for February 13-15 at Grove City College in Grove City, Pa.
