Women's Swimming Leads AMCC Champs after Day One

GROVE CITY, Pa. –
After one day at the 2014 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Swimming Championships, the Cabrini teams have made their mark.  Through today's 12 events, the Blue and White women are in first place, while the men are in fourth.  

The women earned 73 points, 25 points ahead of Penn State Behrend and 29 in front of Franciscan.  Penn State Altoona is in fourth place with 39 points, followed by Pitt-Bradford with 32 points.

On the men's side, Penn State Behrend leads the way with 80 points, followed by Penn State Altoona with 64 and Pitt-Bradford with 42.  The Cavaliers earned 23 points through the day's events.

The Cabrini women wasted little time announcing their presence as the quartet of seniors Courtney Good and Breaghann Smith, junior Morgan Griffith and freshman Christina Melchiorre won the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.26.  Not only did the time set a new school record, it also met the time requirement to qualify the ladies for the ECAC Championship meet.

Smith then placed second in the 500 yard freestyle, with a time of 5:47.92.  Smith was closely followed by fellow senior Elyse Phillips and freshman Allie Stein, who finished third and fourth, respectively.  Good added a third place finish in the 200 yard individual medley, reaching the wall in 2:25.34.

Melchiorre returned to the pool for the 50 yard freestyle and emerged with her first individual championship.  The rookie's winning time of 25.28 seconds was just 0.05 seconds off the school record.  Griffith was hot on her heals, finishing third in 25.33 seconds.

The ladies closed the day with a t third place finish in the 400 yard medley relay.  Griffith, Good, Melchiorre and sophomore Meagan Kalinoski set a new school record with a time of 4:28.03.  

Juniop Evan Strickland led the Cabrini men with a second place finish in the 50 yard freestyle, posting a time of 21.87 seconds.  Strickland also joined freshmen Bobby Schmidt and Hassan David Goines Jr. and sophomore Chris Ryan for a fourth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:33.03.

The Cavaliers will return to Grove City College in the morning for Day Two of the three day championship event.  The events get underway at 10:00 a.m.
