Women's Swimming Captures 2014 AMCC Championship

GROVE CITY, Pa. –
After finishing second at last year's AMCC Championship meet, the Cabrini women's opened this season with championship aspirations.  After three days and 40 events, the Cavaliers achieved their goal, raising the trophy as 2014 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference champions.

The victory marks the first conference championship for the Blue and White swim program and first title for second year head coach Cindy Ikeler.  Cabrini won 11 of the meet's 40 total events enroute to the title.

The ladies closed the three day event with a total score of 243 points, 69 more points than second place Franciscan and 103 more than Penn State Behrend.  Penn State Altoona's 119 points were good for fourth, while Pitt-Bradford finished fifth with 103 points.

Despite a slew of school records and several event wins, the Cabrini men finished in fourth place with 103 points.  Penn State Behrend took the men's title with 269 points.  Penn State Altoona placed second with 207 points, while Pitt-Bradford finished third with 126 points.

For the third consecutive day, the women opened the made their mark in the day's opening event.  The Cavaliers took four of the top five spots in the 1,650 yard freestyle.  For the second consecutive senior Breaghann Smith won the one mile freestyle event, posting a time of 19:29.36.  Fellow senior Elyse Phillips placed second, while freshman Allie Stein finished third and senior Lauren Ciccariello fifth.

Freshman Christina Melchiorre won her third event of the meet, posting a school record time of 54.97 in the 100 yard freestyle.  The rookie's time marked her second AMCC championship meet record, eclipsing the previous mark of 55.32. Melchiorre's three wins also tied her for the AMCC High Point Award for the women with 27 points.  Junior Morgan Griffith was hot on Melchiorre's heel, finishing second in 58.51.

Senior Courtney Good also closed her final meet on a high note, winning the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:43.24.

The Blue and White put a bow of their championship effort, winning the night's final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay with a school record.  The quartet of Griffith, Good, Smith and Melchiorre cut over four seconds of the previous mark with a championship winning time of 3:49.94.

Junior Evan Strickland led a Cabrini men's team that broke three school records on the night.  The junior won his second event title of the meet with a victory in the 100 yard freestyle.  His time of 47.72 seconds broke his own school record of 47.84.

Freshman Todd Walker closed his weekend with a second place finish in the 200 yard backstroke.  His time of 2:03.46 was nearly four seconds faster than his previous record.

Senior Tim McCann finished his career with a fourth place finish in the 1,650 yard freestyle.  McCann's time of 18:23.41 broke his own school record of 18:38.16 by nearly 15 seconds.

The Cabrini men closed the weekend with a third place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay.  The group of Strickland, freshmen Hassan David Goines Jr. and Bobby Schmidt and Walker completed the event in 3:22.50.
