Men's Basketball Uses Late Spurt to Top Highlanders

RADNOR, Pa. – After 30 minutes of neck and neck action, the Cabrini men's basketball team used a 12-4 spurt to pull away from the Cairn University Highlanders to secure an 83-69 win at Nerney Field House.

The victory improves the Blue and White to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.

Senior Vinny Walls led a balanced attack that saw five Cavaliers reach double figure scoring.  The senior hit 7-14, including 3-6 from three point range and 5-5 from the free throw line, for a game high 22 points.

Freshman Jair Green tallied 10 of his 13 points in the final 10 minutes of the game, while sophomore Sean Mayo paired 13 points and nine rebounds.

Freshman Tyheim Monroe notched his first career double-double with 11 points and 12 boards, while senior Howard Blake III hit 7-8 from the charity stripe en route to 11 points.

Neither team could gain control of the momentum in the opening 20 minutes, a perioed that featured five lead changes.  While Cairn shot nearly 52% from the field in the first half, Cabrini built a slim 32-31 halftime lead on the strength of 10 second chance points and converting seven Highlander turnovers into eight points.

The early minutes of the second half saw four ties and a pair of lead changes before the Blue and White took the lead for good with 12:57 to play as sophomore Ryan Charity found junior Ace Henry for a triple and a 50-47 lead.

Cairn came within 54-52 when the Cavaliers responded with a 7-0 run, including free throws by Walls, Charity and a Green three point play.  Minutes later, Green's three pointer gave Cabrini a 10 point cushion with 4:58 to play.

After shooting just 31.3% from the floor in the first half, the Cavaliers found their touch in the second half, connecting on 17-31 in the second half.  The Blue and White also hit 15 of its 17 free throw attempts after the break.

Cabrini also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Highlanders 42-30, including 18 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second chance points.

Senior Reuben Lacy led four Highlanders in double figures with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Sophomore Azariah Parmer added 13 points off the bench and senior Omar Askia 12 for Cairn (0-11, 0-5 CSAC).

The Blue and White will look to build a win streak on Wednesday, when it visits Marywood University on Wednesday.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m. in Scranton, Pa.
