ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team stumbled into 2015, as the Cavaliers fell to Rosemont College 85-78. The Blue and White's first ever loss to the Ravens dropped the club to 5-5 on the season, including 2-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Freshman
Jair Green led the Cavaliers with third double-double of the campaign, pairing a game high 20 points with 10 rebounds. Fellow rookie
Tyheim Monroe added career bests with 19 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.
Senior
Howard Blake III tallied 14 points in just 15 minutes of play, while fellow senior
Vinny Walls added 13 points.
Aaron Walton-Moss secured game high honors with 16 rebounds.
The Blue and White built an early lead as it scored the game's first six points. Less than seven minutes into the action, Cabrini extended its lead to 20-9.
Rosemont fought back to take its first lead of the day at 35-34 with just north of two minutes to play before the halftime break. Both teams exchanged buckets in the final minutes of the stanza, before Monroe's lay-up in the final seconds sent Cabrini into the half with a 38-37 lead.
While Rosemont regained a slim advantage with the opening bucket of the second half, the Blue and White used a 10-0 spurt to rebuild a 10 point lead midway through the second frame.
The Ravens responded with a 10-0 run of its own to cut Cabrini's advantage to 63-61. The Cavaliers maintained a slim lead until the 4:38 mark, when a Rosemont three pointer put the Ravens ahead 71-69.
A Walton-Moss bucket evened the score are 73 with 3:57 on the clock, but the Ravens controlled the game's final minutes, outscoring Cabrini 12-5.
In their first game action since December 16, the Cavaliers struggled with their shooting touch, hitting just four of its 26 three point attempts. The club also hit just 12-20 from the free throw line, including 6-12 in the second half.
The Blue and White also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Ravens 49-38, building a 28-14 advantage in second chance points.
Nadir Stukes led Rosemont (4-7, 2-2 CSAC) with 19 points, while Kyle Lafferty and Marcus Thomas poured in 17 points each.
The Blue and White have little time to regroup, as it will travel to Clarks Summit, Pa. on Monday to face Baptist Bible College (0-8, 0-2 CSAC). Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
