ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Tonight's men's basketball Battle for Eagle Road came down to the final shot, and unfortunately for the Cavaliers, it was Eastern's Malcolm Garrison who knocked it down. Garrison's three pointer with 4.6 seconds to play sent the Blue and White to an 86-85 loss.
Four Cavaliers scored in double figures in the loss, led by sophomore
Deryl Bagwell's 22 points. Freshman
Ivan Robinson added 20 points, including a perfect 4-4 from three point range.
Sophomore
Tyheim Monroe notched his second double-double in as many games, pairing 17 points and 11 boards. Classmate
Jair Green posted 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
The Blue and White connected on 45.1% of its field goal attempts, including 16-31 in the second half despite hitting just three of its nine second half three point attempts.
The Cavaliers could not, however, translate their shooting touch to the free throw line, as they made just 11 of its 20 free throw attempts, including just 8-16 after the break.
After falling behind 9-2, the Cavaliers rallied to even the score at 11. The Cavaliers continued to push, building a six point cushion on Bagwell's triple midway through the opening half.
The lead grew as large as 35-25 on a pair of free throws by Green, but an Eastern three pointer just before the halftime buzzer cut the cushion back to 42-37 at the halftime break.
Eastern wasted no time slicing into Cabrini's lead after the break, opening the half on a 7-0 run. The Cavaliers had an answer, as they did each time it looked as if the Eagles were ready to seize control of the game.
The Eagles eventually tied the score and built a 66-61 lead with eight minutes to play. The Cavaliers again had an answer, using a 9-0 run to build a 74-68 lead with 4:49 to play.
Freshman
Robbie Brosh IV split a pair of free throws with 49 seconds to play, giving Cabrini an 81-76 lead. Garrison's second three pointe rof the night cut the lead back to two points on Eastern's next possession. Monroe hit 1-2 at the stripe on the Cavaliers' next possession before the Eagles hit a lay-up on its next trip.
Bagwell connected on a pair of free throws with 25 seconds to play, putting Cabrini ahead 84-81. The Eagles used its inside dominance to pull within 84-83 on a lay-up with 12 seconds to play. An Eastern foul sent Brosh back to the stripe, where he split a pair of attempts.
On Eastern's final possession of the game, Garrison got a look from beyond the arc and knocked down the game winner, his second made three pointer in the final 36 seconds.
Shaquan Turk led Eastern (1-1) with 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Abraham Kurnick tallied 12 points, while Austin Carroll added 10 points.
The Cavaliers will head south to North Carolina this weekend for the Guilford College Invitational. The Blue and White will face Greensboro College (0-2) on Friday at 5 p.m. and host Guilford (1-0) at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
