READING, Pa. – The Cabrini softball season came to a close today, after falling 6-2 to the Alvernia Crusaders in the first round of the ECAC South Tournament.
The Blue and White finished with a final record of 27-12, good for the sixth most wins in program history.
Today's loss marked the final game for seniors
Lea Enoch,
Becca Miles and
Steph Diegel. The trio has led the Cavaliers to an 83-73 record and back to back CSAC Championship and ECAC Tournament appearances.
Over the course of four years, the seniors have combined for 382 hits, 31 home runs, 256 RBI and 226 runs scored and were integral parts to Cabrini's recent success.
Cabrini opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a run on a pair of hits and one error. Freshman
Christine Ferraro reached first on a bunt single to start the bottom half. Sophomore
Amber Dietrich followed with another bunt single, while Ferraro advanced to third on a throwing error by the third baseman. Ferraro came home to score on junior
Kaitlyn Cooper's sacrifice fly to right field.
The Crusaders evened the score in the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. A three run home run in the sixth by sophomore Brianna DePriest put the Crusaders on top 6-1.
The Cavaliers looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh as Freshman
Francesca Formisano opened the frame with a pinch hit double. Enoch relieved Formisano of her base running duties and scored on sophomore
Taylor Gallagher's single up the middle. Gallagher was stranded at second, as Alvernia recorded the final two outs of the game.
The Cavaliers combined for nine hits, while Ferraro led the way with a pair. Cooper recorded her 42nd RBI, tying Diegel for the team lead.
Freshman
Jess Giordano fell to 9-7 in the circle, after allowing three runs on four hits in 4.0 innings. Fellow freshman
Kaitlyn Hohman went 3.0 innings in relief, surrendering three runs on four hits.
Alvernia will travel to Bethany College on Saturday to take on Misericordia University in the ECAC semifinal round.
