GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Despite a late rally and 71 points from a trio of sophomores, the Cabrini men's basketball team suffered a 101-88 loss at Gwynedd Mercy University tonight. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 8-8 on the season and 6-4 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Sophomore
Tyheim Monroe matched a career high with 28 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for his NCAA Division III leading 16th double-double. Classmate
Jair Green paired 25 points, seven rebounds and four steals, marking his third consecutive game with at least 20 points.
Fellow sophomore
Deryl Bagwell chipped in with 18 points in just 22 minutes off the bench, while freshman guard
Ivan Robinson added nine points and five assists.
The Blue and White built a slim early lead but five minutes into the action, the Griffins took control of the score board with an 11-2 spurt to take an 18-12 lead at the 12:19 mark. Cabrini battled back to even the score at 18 but GMercyU responded with another 10-2 run.
After watching its deficit grow to 45-33, senior
Ace Henry connected on one of his two three pointers to cut the Cavaliers' deficit to seven points with 1:47 left in the opening stanza.
GMercyU notched a bucket in the final seconds of the opening half to take a 50-40 lead at the break.
Cabrini's deficit swung between 9-12 points for much of the opening eight minutes of the second half before expanding to 20 points, ast he Blue and White struggled to get defensive stops.
Trailing 91-71 with 5:12 to play, the Cavaliers began their comeback. A Green jumper capped a 15-3 run that pulled Cabrini to within 94-86 with 1:44 to play.
Following a GMercyU dunk that regained the momentum, the Griffins connected on 5-6 from the free throw line in the final 52 seconds to seal the victory.
All five of GMercyU's starters recorded double figures, led by Julian Hyden and Aaron Goodman, who tallied 18 points each, as the Griffins improved to 12-5 and 10-0 in CSAC play.
The Blue and White will return to the hardwood on Saturday, as it plays the second half of Cabrini's annual Alumni Day doubleheader. The Cabrini women (10-8, 7-2 CSAC)will face Keystone College (7-10, 4-5 CSAC) at 2 p.m., with the men to face Cairn University (7-10, 3-7 CSAC) at 4 p.m.
The day's action will conclude with the men's basketball alumni game, slated for 6 p.m.
