Game Recap: Basketball (Women) |

Fast Start Sends Women's Basketball to Win over Notre Dame

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cavaliers jumped out to a 28-11 lead after 10 minutes and never looked back, as the Cabrini women's basketball team scored a 79-48 victory over Notre Dame of Maryland University tonight at Nerney Field House.

With the win, the Blue and White improved to 10-8 overall and 7-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.

All 13 players on the roster saw action in the wire to wire win, with no player seeing more than 29 minutes on the hardwood.

Senior Dana Peterson connected on 6-9 from the floor, including 3-4 from three point range, to lead 11 Cabrini scorers. Junior Renee Oliver added a season high 13 points, while senior Meghan Martin chipped in with 11 points.

Freshman Gaby Jones paired a career high eight points and seven boards, one more point than fellow rookie Nomi Washington.

Senior Mo O'Connell owned the glass to the tune of a career best 14 rebounds to go with six points, two steals and three blocked shots.

The Blue and White grabbed an early lead, as four players combined to give the Cavaliers a 9-0 lead just over two minutes into the action.  Cabrini showed no let-up as its lead grew as high as 28-9 on sophomore Sabrina Hackendorn's free throws in the final seconds in the opening quarter.

After shooting nearly 53% from the floor in the first quarter, the Blue and White struggled to find its shooting touch in the second quarter.  The Cavaliers went scoreless for almost five minutes to open the second period, as Notre Dame pulled within 30-11.

Cabrini turned up its defense in the latter minutes of the frame, holding the Gators to just 2-7 shooting over the final five minutes of the half.  The Cavaliers turned their defense into offense, outscoring Notre Dame 16-5 during that span to build a 46-24 halftime lead.

The Cavaliers didn't let the halftime break slow their mojo, as the club used a 9-0 spurt early in the third quarter to inflate its cushion to 58-29 at the 6:33 mark.  A Jones free throw sent Cabrini into the final period with a comfortable 64-38 lead.

Cabrini outrebounded the Gators 47-43 on the night, including a 22-12 advantage in offensive boards, which led to a 23-9 lead in second chance points.

Tonight also marked the eighth time this season the Blue and White has forced at least 20 turnovers, while giving the ball away a season low nine times.  The Cavaliers forced 28 Notre Dame miscues and converted them into 34 points.

Sophomore Zaria Comer led the Gators (6-11, 2-7 CSAC) with 16 points on 7-8 shooting to go with six rebounds and four assists. Classmate Stephanie Roche added 14 points and a team high seven rebounds, connecting on two of the team's four three pointers on the night.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, when they welcome Keystone College (7-1, 4-5 CSAC) to Nerney Field House for the first half of Cabrini's Alumni Day doubleheader.  The ladies will tip at 2 p.m. with the Cabrini men (8-8, 6-4 CSAC) to face Cairn (7-10, 3-7 CSAC) at 4 p.m.  The day's activities will open at 11 a.m., when the women's alumni game tips off.

In conjunction with the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, Cabrini will host a bone marrow donor registry drive from 1-5 p.m. in the Dixon Center.  Students, faculty, staff and fans are all encouraged to participate in the donor drive. It's fast and painless, and free.

If you are between the ages of 18 and 60 and in general good health, you are eligible to be screened and join the worldwide registry for patients in need. A simple swab from the inside of your cheek is all it takes to determine if you are a match.
