Men's Basketball Fends off 2nd Half Comeback to Top Eastern 81-66

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team withstood a furious run to open the second half to score an 81-66 win over Eastern University in tonight's season opener, reclaiming Eagle Road supremacy.

Junior Tyheim Monroe picked up where he finished last season, pairing 26 points and 17 rebounds for his 28th consecutive double-double.  Sophomore Ivan Robinson added 17 points, while junior Deryl Bagwell chipped in with 12 points, despite committing his fourth foul early in the second half.

Senior Ryan Charity recorded nine points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals, while sophomore Kwame Dokes paired eight points and nine boards in his first career start.

Junior Joe Mostardi accounted for the Blue and White's first bucket of 2016-17, a three pointer that gave Cabrini a lead it would not relinquish.

Despite never losing their lead, the Cavaliers could not pull away for much of the half, as Eastern had an answer every time Cabrini looked poised to pull away.

The Blue and White began creating some separation late in the first half, as a 7-0 run, highlighted by a Monroe breakaway dunk, pushed the lead to 37-26 with 1:43 left in the half. A late Easter bucket sent the teams into the half with Cabrini leading 37-28.

Cabrini opened the second stanza with back to back baskets by Bagwell and Dokes before Eastern began its comeback.

Eastern senior Shaquan Turk scored seven of the Eagle's first 10 points of the second half, including a one-handed dunk, to pull the Eagles within 41-38.

Charity quieted a resurgent Eastern crowd with a three point play to push the cushion back to six points.

The Eagles pulled within three points minutes later, but the Cavaliers scored on five consecutive possessions over a two minute span before sophomore Mike Doyle hit Robinson for one of his three triples to give the Blue and White a 58-47 lead with 9:51 to play.

Eastern pulled within 67-61 at the 4:21 mark, but consecutive buckets from Monroe and Dokes dispatched the threat.

Turk led the Eagles with 25 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots, while sophomore Abraham Kurnick chipped in with 11 pints off the bench.

Cabrini will head to Salisbury, MD this weekend for the Salisbury University Optimist Tournament. The Blue and White will face Johns Hopkins University (0-1) on Friday at 5:30pm in the tournament's opener.
