Men's Basketball Comeback Fall Short in CSAC Semifinal

ASTON, Pa. – The Cavaliers battled back from an 18 point second half deficit and had several chances to even the score in the final 90 seconds but after 40 minutes, the Cabrini men's basketball team saw its 2015-16 season come to an end with tonight's 76-75 loss at Neumann in the semifinal round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament.

The loss ends the Blue and White's campaign at 16-11 and ends the career of senior Ace Henry.  The senior led the Cavaliers to 33 victories and averaged 7.4 points per game, while shooting better than 40% from the field and from three point range.

Sophomore Tyheim Monroe paced the Cavaliers tonight, posting his Division III leading 26th double-double in as many games.  The sophomore paired 22 points and 12 rebounds, to go with four assists and three steals in 40 minutes of action.

Junior Ryan Charity hit 6-9 from the floor, scoring 15 points in 22 minutes, while sophomore Deryl Bagwell added 12 points off the bench.  Freshman Ivan Robinson chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Knights ran out to a 15-6 lead just five minutes into the action before Cabrini rallied back, pulling within 15-14 minutes later.  The Cavaliers kept the game close until a quick 6-0 spurt gave Neumann a 34-24 lead with less than six minutes left in the opening stanza.  A late three pointer pushed the Knights' advantage to 46-34 at the half.

Cabrini's hole deepened in the opening minutes of the second half, as  a Cavaliers' turnover led to a Neumann lay-up and a seemingly comfortable 60-42 lead with 14 minutes to play.

The Blue and White methodically battled back, chiseling Neumann's lead possession by possession. Monroe's bucket cut the Knight's lead to 71-66 before Henry's triple on Cabrini's next possession whittled the deficit to four points.

Minutes later, a Bagwell jumper pulled the Cavaliers to within 75-73 with 90 seconds to play.  Cabrini forced a Neumann miss and grabbed the defensive rebound before its potential tying jumper was blocked.  The Knights grabbed the defensive board and forced a Cabrini foul.

Neumann split a pair of free throws, as Monroe's rebound led to a Green lay-up, cutting Neumann's lead to 76-75.  The Knights kept Cabrini n in the game, missing the front end of a one and one.  Neumann secured the offensive rebound before missing another front end.  While the Cavaliers corralled the defensive board, a late turnover derailed the comeback attempt.

Darian Butler led the Knights (19-7) with 22 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots, while James Butler added 18 points and nine boards.  DeShawn Lowman chipped in with 16 points.

By virtue of tonight's victory, Neumann will visit top seeded Gwynedd Mercy (20-6) in Saturday's CSAC championship game.   GMercyU topped number four seed Rosemont (13-14) 92-84 in tonight's other semifinal.
