Women's Lacrosse Ends Season with 2nd Round NCAA Tournment Loss

SALISBURY, Md. – For the second time in four years, the Salisbury University Sea Gulls put an end to the Cabrini women's lacrosse season.  The Cavaliers suffered a 21-1 loss to end the 2013 season, and today, fell to the No. 3 Sea Gulls 15-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The loss closes the Blue and White's season with a 14-6 overall record and ends the careers of Cabrini's five seniors, Krista Hoffman, Katie Lasater, Mo O'Connell, Dana Peterson and Caitlyn Poole.

Among the most successful classes in program history, the group has led the Cavaliers to 53 victories, including 28 Colonial States Athletic Conference wins, four consecutive conference titles and two of the program's three NCAA Tournament triumphs.

In their 188 appearances in the Blue and White, the group accounted for 166 points on 128 goals and 38 assists, secured 214 ground balls and 62 draw controls, while causing 94 turnovers.

Salisbury jumped out to an early lead in today's tournament game, scoring the game's first goal less than two minutes into the action.  The Cavaliers held the Sea Gulls to one goal for the next 10 minutes, before Salisbury tallied three goals in a three minute span.

Trailing 4-0, sophomore Sasha Wozniak scored Cabrini's lone goal, as she completed a free position shot midway through the opening half.

The Sea Gulls expanded thier lead to 8-1 at the halftime break before keeping the Cavaliers scoreless in the second half.

The Cavaliers struggled to find their offensive rhythm against the nation's fourth ranked scoring defense.  Cabrini mustered just nine shots on the day, including four on goal.  Cabrini was also forced into a season high 29 turnovers, while completing just nine of its 18 clearing chances.

Junior Allie Vallen accounted for three of Cabrini's nine shots on the day, while Wozniak and sophomore Jackie Neary recorded two each.

Junior goaltender Megan Barlow and junior Jess Breuning scooped three ground balls each, while Barlow recorded six saves.

Vallen caused a team high three turnovers, while Neary and O'Connell paired two caused turnovers and two draw controls each.

Junior Gabbi Nieves led Salisbury (17-2) with four goals and five caused turnovers, while freshman Gabrielle Mongno added three goals.  Sophomore Kristen Murphy paired a goal and three assists.  Sophomore goaltender Gianna Falcone earned the victory with three saves.

With the victory, Salisbury advances to Saturday's third round, where it will face either Rhodes College or Colorado College.
