GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Cabrini softball season came to a close today, as the Cavaliers fell 4-3 to Arcadia in today's ECAC South softball championship game.
The Blue and White finished its 2016 season at 25-18 overall, tying the 2010 and 2014 clubs for eighth most wins in program history.
Today's loss also closed the career of senior Kaitlyn Cooper. Over the last four years, Cooper has recorded a career batting average of .371, to go along with 187 hits, 124 RBI, 17 home runs, 132 runs scored, 419 assists and 287 putouts.
Cooper helped lead the Cavaliers to three straight CSAC title appearances and proved to be an integral part to Cabrini's recent success.
Cooper put Cabrini on the board first in the third inning, as the senior's two run home run cleared the left field wall. The two run blast marked the senior's fifth round tripper on the year.
The Blue and White held a 2-0 lead heading into the sixth inning but Arcadia fought back, as a three run, three hit inning gave the Knights the lead. A sacrifice fly in the seventh extended the Knights lead to 4-2.
The Cavaliers rally fell just short in the bottom half of the seventh, as the Blue and White fell one run shy.
Sophomore Emily Smull opened the inning with a single up the middle. With two outs, freshman Darian Caputo stepped into the batter's box and singled to short to keep the inning alive, while sophomore Brittany Smith, who was pinch running for Smull, scored on a muffed throw by the first baseman. A pop fly to left field the following at bat ended the game.
Cooper finished 1-3 at the plate and led the way with a pair of RBI. The senior also recorded five assists and one putout.
Ferraro, Smull and freshman Marissa Alpaugh each collected a pair of hits, while five Cavaliers combined for eight hits in the loss.
Sophomore Jess Giordano pitched another complete game and surrendered three earned runs on seven hits.
Arcadia's ECAC South championship marked the first in program history.
