RADNOR, PA – After closing five games with the same feeling of disappointment, the Cabrini women's soccer team stepped off the pitch tonight with smiles, as the Cavaliers earned their first victory of 2016.
The Blue and White improved to 1-5 on the season with tonight's 3-1 victory over the visiting Delaware Valley Aggies at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The Cavaliers dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Aggies 22-6, including a 16-6 advantage in the second half. The Blue and White also forced seven corner kicks, with five coming after the halftime break.
Freshman
Katelyn Gilinger put the Cabrini on the board in the 26th minute, as sophomore
Meghan Horn headed a pass over the Delaware Valley goalkeeper to Gilinger, who was alone in front of the net.
The lead grew just two minutes later, when Gilinger's through ball found fellow rookie
Alex Garces, whose shot nicked the bottom of the crossbar before crossing the goal line.
Gilinger returned to the scoring column in the 34th minute, as she beat a defender then outmaneuvered the goaltender in a one on one situation.
A 78th minute penalty kick was all that stood between junior goaltender
Gabby LeGendre and her first career shutout. The junior netminder closed the night with a pair of saves.
Junior
Kelsee Tironi led the Cavaliers with four shots on the night, one more than horn and junior
Taylor Tralie. Senior
Allie Vallen joined Garces and Gilinger with two shots each.
Senior Karla Keler converted the penalty kick for Delaware Valley (2-4-1) and recorded two of the Aggies' seven shots.
Prior to tonight's action, the Cavaliers added another player to its roster, as 13 year old Lucy Kutz joined the team through Team IMPACT, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team.
Team IMPACT children are drafted onto college athletic teams, local to where they live, and to the greatest extent possible, become a member of the team from Draft Day through to Graduation.
