IMMACULATA, PA – The Cabrini women's basketball team suffered its second consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference loss tonight, as it fell to Immaculata University 70-54.
The loss dropped the Cavaliers to 10-9 overall and 8-2 in the conference.
The Blue and White committed just 14 turnovers and secured 23 offensive rebounds, both among its best efforts of the season, but those numbers could not overcome the team's 22.1% shooting. The Cavaliers connected on just 17-77, including 4-19 from the three point line.
Cavaliers scored in double figures tonight, led by sophomore
Nomi Washington. The sophomore paired 16 points with seven rebounds and a career high sevens steals. Freshman
Erin Dodds added 11 points and seven boards, while senior
Renee Oliver narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Blue and White scored the game's first four points of the game and held a slim lead throughout the first quarter. The Mighty Macs evened the score at four before a three point play by freshman
Meghan Matthews pushed the lead back for four with 45 seconds left in the period. Following an Immaculata bucket, a Dodds' free throw gave Cabrini a 12-9 lead after 10 minutes.
Cabrini lost its control of the action in the second quarter, as it connected on just 3-18 from the field in the second period. Immaculata took full advantage, using an 18-2 run to gain control of the momentum. The Blue and White trailed by as many as 13 points in the frame, before Dodds' recorded five consecutive points to pull the Cavaliers to within 33-25 at the half.
The Cavaliers tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter, as a Matthews' lay-up capped a 6-0 spurt to pull Cabrini to within 39-36 four minutes into the second half. The Mighty Macs extended their lead back to nine points and carried a 52-44 into the final 10 minutes of action.
Once again, the Blue and White looked to mount a comeback, pulling within six points twice in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump.
Matthews finished the night with seven points and five rebounds, while classmate
Cassidy Gallagher secured eight rebounds.
Tamyra Laws recorded a monster double-double in the win, pairing 29 points and 19 rebounds for the Mighty Macs (6-12, 6-3 CSAC). Gina Cocci added 12 points and seven assists.
Cabrini will face another tough road test on Saturday, as it heads to Centenary University (14-4, 7-2 CSAC). Game time is slated for 2pm in Hackettstown, NJ.
