Newport News, VA - The Cabrini women's soccer team was unable to keep their season alive tonight as they lost in the NCAA First Round to No. 7 Christopher Newport University.
The Captains used a 33-4 advantage in shots, highlighted by four goals in the second half, to capture the 6-0 victory over the visiting Cavaliers on their home turf.
With the loss, Cabrini caps their 2017 season with a 13-3-4 record and the title of Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) champions.
Despite seniors
Taylor Tralie and
Brittany Runyen recording the first two shots in the game, the Captains got on the board first in the 21st minute as freshman Victoria Reed took a touch pass from sophomore Logan Montel and pushed it past senior keeper
Gabby LeGendre.
Three minutes later, sophomore
Payton Greene and the Cavalier offense again put pressure on senior CNU keeper Carly Maglio, who was forced to make her third save in 24 minutes, but proved to be up for the task.
CNU doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when junior Gabby Gillis picked up her 14th goal of the year as she launched a shot from 20 yards out.
The Captains would carry a 2-0 lead, courtesy of a 12-3 advantage in shots, into the intermission.
The second half saw a Christopher Newport team that showed its strength on both sides of they pitch as they added four goals in the second stanza, while the defense allowed just one shot from the Blue and White, coming off the foot of senior Kelsee Tironi in the 56th minute.
As mentioned, the Cavs offense was held in check throughout the night as they managed just four shots, with three coming on goal. The Captains also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks over the 90 minute match.
LeGendre finished the game with a season high 14 saves, while being faced with a season high 33 shots.
With the win, Christopher Newport advances to the NCAA Second Round where it will face the winner of the day's second game which features No. 20 Lynchburg College (18-3) and McDaniel College (12-5-2). The second round matchup will take place on Sunday, with a game time set for 7pm.
