Women's Basketball Tops Eastern in Battle of Eagle Road

St. Davids, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team opened up their 2017-18 season with a hard fought victory over rival Easter University in the annual Battle of Eagle Road.

The 66-53 win gave the Cavaliers their first victory over the Eagles in four years, dating back to the 2013-14 season.

Head coach Kate Pearson received key performances tonight from a handful of underclassmen, highlighted by freshman Lexi Edwards who tallied a game high 18 points in her Blue and White debut. Fellow rookie Kirsten Searcy chipped in seven points along with three rebounds and two assists.

Sophomore Meghan Matthews stuffed the stat sheet as she needed just one game to pick up her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 boards. Junior Nomi Washington tied her career high with seven steals, while also adding 12 points.

Edwards opened up the scoring for both teams by knocking down a three just 40 seconds into her Blue and White tenure. Eagles' senior Amanda Riff answered right back for the hosts, knocking down a three of her own to tie things back up.

The first quarter continued to be back and fourth as neither team was able to gain much ground, resulting in a 15-14 advantage for the Cavs after the first 10 minutes.

Cabrini opened up the second quarter with a 12-2 run, capped by a Matthews three pointer, to put them up 27-16 with just over five minutes left in the half. The Eagles managed to slowly chip away at the deficit as they trailed by just six heading into the intermission.

A quick 7-2 spurt from the Eagles to open up the third quarter cut the Cavs' lead to just one, but Edwards answered the call for the Blue and White as she earned three the old fashioned way with a basket and the foul.

Up just 36-34 with 6:20 left in the third, Cabrini rattled off a clutch 10-2 run to go back up by 10. A pair of free throws from Eagles' senior Taylor Price capped the scoring in the third with the Cavs holding a 46-38 lead.

Eastern refused to go down quietly in the fourth, but a trio of freshmen for the Cavs helped keep the Eagles comeback hopes at bay. Kate Lannon, along with Edwards and Searcy combined for eight points in the quarter as the Cavs were able to outlast the Eagles for the win.

Other notable performances for the Cavs include senior Sabrina Hackendorn, who chipped in six points, five rebounds and two assists in just 13 minutes of action.

Eagles' sophomore Regie Robinson collected her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, as well as adding three blocks and three steals.

Cabrini will next face Wheaton College on Nov. 17 when they travel to Union, NJ for the Kean Classic. Game time is slated for 5pm.
