Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Short as Cavaliers Fall in Overtime

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball erased a 14 point halftime deficit, but fell short after 45 minutes of action, as the Cavaliers suffered a 103-92 loss at Gwynedd Mercy.

The loss snapped the Blue and White's four game win streak and dropped Cabrini to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in CSAC play.

Senior Tyheim Monroe led three Cavaliers in double figures, as the senior paired 27 points, 22 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.  This marks the forward's second consecutive 20 point, 20 rebound performance and sixth of his career.

Juniors Ivan Robinson and Mike Doyle added 16 points each, while sophomore Keith Blasingale added 13 points.

The Blue and White struggled in the first half, as it shot just .333 from the field, including 4-14 from three point range.

Senior Chris Lawhorn hit a three pointer for Cabrini's first bucket and an early 3-2 lead, but the Griffins responded with a 9-0 spurt and took control of the action.

Gwynedd Mercy pushed its lead to nine points and led by as many as 16 points after a par of Rich Dunham free throw with 5:48 left in the first half.  The Griffins carried a 52-38 lead into the break after connecting on 8-12 from three point range and .576 from the field.

The Cavaliers used a hot start to the second half to get back into the game. The Blue and White used a 15-1 run to pull within 57-56 after a Blassingale free throw at the 12:57 mark.

One minute later, Cabrini took its first lead since 3-2 on a Robinson lay-up for a 61-60 lead.  The advantage was short-lived as a Dunham three point play pushed the lead back to 67-61.

Despite not regaining the lead, the Cavaliers kept the game close.  Down 85-81 with 1:51 on the clock, Doyle stepped to the charity stripe and connected on a pair of free throws, cutting the deficit to two points.

A Monroe steal gave the ball back to the Cavaliers, before the senior grabbed the rebound from his missed jumper and laid it in to even the score at 85 with 74 seconds to play.

Both teams had chances to win in regulation, but combined to go 0-4 with a turnover in the final minute, forcing overtime.

The Griffins pulled away in the extra period, as it scored the first 11 points of the five minute stanza.

After struggling with its shooting touch in the first half, Cabrini rallied to shoot 14-27 in the second half, while holding the Griffins to just .353.

Freshman DJ Smith chipped in with nine points in the loss, while classmate Trey Smith added eight points.

Will Davis posted a career high 29 points for the Griffins (6-1, 3-0 CSAC), while Courtney Cubbage paired 21 points and 11 boards. Dunham finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

The Blue and White will turn its attention to finals week, before heading to Miami, FL for the Eastern University HoopMIA D3 Holiday Shootout on Dec. 19.  The Cavaliers will face Chapman University at 10am.
