RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball celebrated the careers of seniors
Ryan Charity and
Kane McGovern with a 100-83 win over Gwynedd Mercy today at Nerney Field House.
With the win, the Cavaliers clinched the number two seed and a first round bye in next week's Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament. The Blue and White also improved to 19-6 overall and 15-3 in the CSAC.
Charity led five Cavaliers in double figure scoring, as the senior poured in 19 points. Junior
Tyheim Monroe notched his 24th double-double of the season, pairing 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Fellow junior
DeVahnte Mosley matched Monroe's 15 points, while classmate
Deryl Bagwell stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots.
McGovern connected on 3-5 from three point range en route to a career high 13 points in his first start of the season.
Both teams battled back and forth in the early minutes, but Charity and McGovern combined for all eight points in an 8-2 Cabrini spurt, as the Cavaliers built an 18-12 lead seven minutes in to the game.
Cabrini's lead swelled to 34-25 as freshman
Keith Blassingale and junior
Chris Lawhorn connected on back to back three pointers with just south of five minutes left in the first half.
Monroe split a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the stanza, giving the Blue and White a 43-31 lead at the break.
Cabrini used a solid defensive effort to build its halftime lead, as it held the Griffins to just .317 first half shooting, including 0-7 from three point range.
The Cavaliers stayed hot to open the second half, as Bagwell drained consecutive three pointers, extending the lead to 53-33 just over two minutes in the second period.
GMercyU quickly trimmed the lead with an 8-0 spurt. Kane had an answer, as Monroe found him for a three pointer, pushing Cabrini's lead back to 62-45.
Despite GMercyU shooting nearly 56% in the second half and outrebounding the Cavaliers 25-13, Cabrini never allowed the Griffins to mount a serious comeback, as the Blue and White cushion never fell below 11 points.
Cabrini's aggressiveness paid off, as it made 30 trips to the free throw line in the second half, connecting on 23 attempts. The Blue and White also hit 6-11 from beyond the three point line after the break.
Seven Griffins (19-6, 13-5 CSAC) scored at least seven points, with four reaching double figures. Senior Arron Goodman led the way with 16 points off the bench, while sophomore Ty Jones added 14.
Prior to today's game, Monroe was also honored for reaching the 1,000 career rebound plateau last week. The junior is one of just five players in conference history to achieve the mark and currently sits third on the league's all-time list.
The Blue and White also recognized its fall teams for their championship performances. The Cabrini field hockey and volleyball teams were recognized at halftime, as were men's soccer senior A.J. Bishop and women's soccer junior Gabby LeGendere for their all-region accolades.
Cabrini will now wait until Monday night to learn their opponent in Wednesday's CSAC Tournament semifinal round. The Cavaliers will face the higher seed from Monday's first round games.
Third seeded GMercyU will host number six seed Centenary, while fourth seed Rosemont will host number five seed Immaculata.
Neumann, the tournament's top seed, will face the lowest seed from Monday's winners.
