RADNOR, PA - The Cavaliers dropped their regular season finale Saturday afternoon against the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins by a score of 61-49.
Freshman
Erin Dodds led the Blue and White with 11 points and six rebounds, followed by junior
Myonie Williamson with 10 points. Senior
Renee Oliver, the lone Cavalier celebrating senior night, nearly picked up her eighth double-double on the season as she finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Blue and White started hot again tonight, hitting two of their first three shots as well as three of their first four free throw attempts to jump out to an 8-2 lead less than three minutes into the game. The Griffins were unfazed however, rattling off a 12-2 run spanning just two and a half minutes and took a 14-8 lead in the process. A pair of free throws by sophomore
Nomi Washington briefly cut the lead to 14-10 before Griffins' junior Julianna Hoisington hit a layup to extend it back to a six point margin. The Cavs would end the first quarter trialing 17-12.
Needing some stops, the Cavs stepped up their defense in the second quarter and held the Griffins to just five points. The visitors hit just 2-16 shots in the second, swinging the momentum back in favor of the host Cavaliers. A balanced attack from Williamson (two points), Dodds (four points) and freshman
Meghan Matthews (four points) in the quarter tied the game heading into intermission at 22 apiece.
What the Griffins lacked in the second quarter, they made up for in the third. The visitors hit 8-14 shots (57%) from the field, including 3-5 from downtown, with seven different players recording at least one point. Hoisington dealt most of her damage in the third, recording eight of her ten points, highlighted by two three pointers. Oliver (seven points in the quarter) and the Cavs did what they could to keep it close, but trailed 46-37 heading into the final stanza.
The fourth quarter wasn't kind to the Cavaliers early on as they only managed to hit 2-11 shots and had to watch as Gwynedd Mercy slowly extended their lead. The Blue and White showed resiliency, however as they clawed their way back thanks in part to two quick steals and a transition bucket from Washington. A layup by Oliver with 3:25 left in the game cut the Griffins lead to just six points and had the Cavs primed for a comeback. After a layup from Griffins' senior Nicole Dombrowski, the Cavs were forced to start fouling to stop the clock. Their efforts would ultimately fall short as Gwynedd Mercy would escape the Dixon Center with the win thanks to hitting 9-10 free throws within the final minute of action.
As mentioned, the loss closed the book on the Cavs' regular season, finishing with an overall record of 14-11 and 12-4 in conference play. Despite their loss, the Cavs still secured their spot in the CSAC tournament as the fifth seed, with Gwynedd Mercy claiming the third seed.
Gwynedd Mercy junior Bianca Adams recorded a game high 14 points. Senior Charlotte Kucowski was troublesome for the Cavs all night as she collected a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds, as well as collecting five blocks.
The Cavaliers will next travel to Centenary University on Monday, February 20 for the opening round of the CSAC tournament. Game time has yet to be announced.
