Cavs Christen New Season With Sweep of PSU Brandywine

West Chester, PA - A picture perfect day in every sense of the phrase, the Cabrini Cavaliers baseball team officially wrote the first page in its history book with a two game sweep of the visiting Penn State Brandywine Lions.

Game 1: Cabrini 10, PSU Brandywine 9
Nicholas Gares was the starting pitcher for the first baseball game in Cabrini history and was excellent despite working himself into a jam in the first inning. After quickly retiring the first two batters he faced via groundout and strikeout, the lefty from Edgewater Park, NJ hit the next two men. With two runners on, the Lions' Matt Masi beat out an infield single to load the bases. Brian Reynolds then worked out a walk to push across the game's first run. Gares responded, however as he induced an easy pop out to end the inning.

The Cavs offense picked their pitcher up in the bottom of the second as Jamal Lamar started things off with a single to left. Joe Aurite followed that with double to right center and scoring Lamar in the process. Aurite ended up on third thanks to a throwing error on the play. A ground out by the Cavaliers next hitter, Jesse James Murphy, was all Aurite needed to score, moving the Cavs in front 2-1.

The Blue and White would tack on another in the bottom of the third, courtesy of a Lamar sac fly.

After shutting down the visiting Lions the previous two innings, Gares allowed back-to-back singles in the top of the fourth that resulted in an unearned run and cut the Cavs lead to 3-2. After a second error in the inning, Gares now found himself with a runner on second and third with only one out. The freshman came up huge as he forced a shallow pop up and picked up his fifth strikeout of the game to close out the inning and his Cavalier debut.

After a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth for Brandywine's starter Brian Ulmer (4IP, 2ER, 3K), the Cavs' Andrew Del Giudice took the mound in relief of Gares. The Lions capitalized on the new pitcher, stringing together three hits and five runs in their half of the inning to take the lead 7-3.

With the four run lead in the bottom of the fifth, the Lions turned to their bullpen and brought in Joe Samohod, and just like the Lions, Cabrini capitalized on the new pitcher. Casey Plunkett started things with a double to left and was quickly brought in by Dylan Butler who drilled first of three home runs on the day. Back-to-back singles had the Cavs threatening again as Aurite stepped into the batters box. The freshman lined to left, picking up two RBI's, and made it all the way to third thanks to a Brandywine error. Riding the momentum of tying the game back up at 7 apiece, the Cavs struck two more times in the inning, extending the lead to 9-7 heading into the top of the sixth.

The Cavs needed a shut down inning and they got it from Josh Breittholz as he retired the Lions in order. After another Butler home run in the bottom of the sixth, the Cavs were looking to shut the door and close out their first game with a win. The Lions made it interesting, scoring two in the top of the seventh, but Breittholz and the Cavs would hang on for the win.

Breittholz picked up the win, firing 2.1 innings and picking up two strikeouts. Butler (2-3, 3R, 3RBI, 2HR) and Aurite (2-4, 2R, 3RBI) combined to go 4-7 with five runs, six RBI's and two homers in their Cavalier debut.

Brian Reynolds led the way for the Lions, finishing 3-3 with three runs and  two RBI.

Game 2: Cabrini 5, PSU Brandywine 3
In the back end of the double header, Tyler Norris got the start for the Cavaliers. Norris gave up two first inning runs by way of a Kevin Rouche RBI groundout and a Masi RBI triple to center. Norris would get out of it, stranding two Lions in the process.

The Cavs would load the bases in the bottom of the second thanks to a leadoff single from Lamar followed by two errors by the Lions. With one out, Brendan Van Belle brought home a run with a deep sac fly to get the Blue and White on the board. A base running mishap on the play spoiled the Cavs chance to tack on more.

A passed ball in the top of the third extended the Lions lead to 3-1.

After a Cabrini walk, Butler, as he seemed to do all day, would answer for the Cavs. This time with his third homer of the day, and his second two-run shot. The home run tied the game at three apeice heading into bottom of the fourth.

Jake Dohar came on in relief of Norris to start the fifth. The young lefty had his opposition off balance for the remainder of the game, only surrendering three hits the rest of the way, while also picking up three strikeouts.

Dohar helped him self out in the bottom of the fourth after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home a run. Another walk with the bases loaded by Lamar was all the Cavs would need to secure their second win of the day.

Dohar recorded the victory for the Cavs with the Lions' Tyler Michaels (3IP, 6H, 4ER) picking up the loss.

The Cavs next game will be part of their spring break trip to Auburndale, FL when they take on Finlandia University Monday, Feb. 27 at 11:30am.
