Williamson's Buzzer Beater Advances Cavs to CSAC Semifinal

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ - Myonie Williamson played the role of hero for the Cavaliers, as they upset the #4 seeded Centenary Cyclones (20-6, 13-3 CSAC) in a first round thriller in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tournament Monday evening by a final score of 48-46.

Tied at 46 apiece, Williamson drained a buzzer beater as time expired to propel the Blue and White into Wednesday's semifinal round, where they will travel to Scranton to take on the top seed Marywood Pacers.

Nomi Washington led the scoring charge for the Cavs (15-11, 12-4 CSAC) as she finished with a team high 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Erin Dodds chipped in eight points and four assists.

The first quarter featured a total of 14 points between both teams with the Cyclones' Mallory George responsible for five of her team's six points. The Cavs wasted no time in the second quarter, however, as Washington and Williamson hit back-to-back lay ups with Williamson earning the and-one. After the made free throw, the Cavs held their largest lead of the game at 13-6 with 7:27 left in the second. The host Cyclones responded with a 12-6 run to end the half, thanks to a balanced attack from George, Nicole Cartaino, Rachel Edwards and Amber Reisenwitz.

With the momentum in their favor, the Cyclones took the 20-19 lead off the hand of Kelsey Barofski less than a minute into the third quarter. Washington answered with a layup for the Cavs, hitting only the team's second field goal in the last four and a half minutes of action. On the Cyclones' next possession, however, George worked in a layup to take the lead right back. A three pointer from Julia Presant, followed by a Barofski layup pushed Centenary's lead to six, their largest of the game, at 31-25 with 5:09 left in the third.

On a night where points were hard to come by, the Cavaliers did everything they had to do to keep themselves in the game. When the fourth quarter rolled around, the Blue and White found itself down by only two and needing a stop. Washington delivered with her fifth steal of the game and took it all the way, as she finished with the lay in and tied the game at 36. The two teams traded baskets back and forth, until Cassidy Gallagher connected on a huge three to put the Cavs up 4 with 2:23 remaining. After a jumper from Edwards, Barofski nailed a game tying layup with just 31 seconds remaining.

Playing for the last shot, the Cavaliers got the ball in the hands of Williamson, who drilled the go-ahead jumper as time expired. Williamson finished the game with eight points, four assists, two steals and, potentially, the biggest shot of her career thus far.

As mentioned, the Cavaliers will next take the court when they travel to Marywood University to take on the Pacers in the semifinal round of the CSAC tournament. Game time is slated for 7pm.
