Cavs Struggle in 11-2 Loss Against Hanover

WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Cabrini Cavaliers struggled to get anything going in Tuesday's 11-2 loss against the Hanover College Panthers.

The Panthers received a solid outing from starting pitcher Tanner Simpson who lasted six innings, giving up five hits and zero runs.

Joseph Schipsi started the game for the Cavs and certainly pitched better than his line (6IP, 11H, 8ER, 3K) would suggest. The Cavs defense struggled for the third consecutive game, as they were charged for three errors against Hanover; over their last three contests, the Blue and White has committed a total of 13 errors.

The Panthers opened the game with a leadoff double from David Herman and quickly had runners on first and second with no outs after the two hole hitter, John Scheil, was hit by a Schipsi fastball. Wasting no time, Jack Shine ripped a double into left center to plate both runners and give the Panthers the early 2-0 lead. A sac fly from the cleanup hitter, Chase Sizemore brought home Scheil to push the lead up to three. Bryce Fields capped the scoring in the first for the Panthers with an RBI single up the middle to make it a 4-0 lead.

After a quiet top of the second from the visiting Cavaliers, Schipsi came back out the mound looking for a quick inning. The lefty found what he was looking for as he retired the Panthers in order to close out the bottom of the second.

The Panthers would add on three runs in the bottom of the third as they pieced together back-to-back doubles and a single from their 2-3-4 hitters, as well as a little bit of help from Schipsi who overthrew his first baseman on a pickoff attempt, allowing the runner on first to advance to third. With Sizemore on third, Fields poked a ball just deep enough into right field to pick up the sacrifice.

After another three run inning for the Panthers, this time in the sixth, the Blue and White finally pushed across its first runs of the game in the top of the seventh. Erick Vicario led things off with a single up the middle. Shaun Stackhouse followed with a sharp single to the right of the second baseman who made a diving attempt on the ball and was able to knock it down and throw to first. Stackhouse beat out the throw, while Vicario was able to leg it to third on the infield single.

Stackhouse promptly stole second and moved himself into scoring position in the process. Casey Plunkett loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Dylan Butler stepped in the batters box. The junior roped a ball to the left side, only to have the third baseman flag it down. After a strike out from Michael Mescia, Jamal Lamar pushed across the Cavs only runs with a single to right.

The Panthers would get those two runs back in the bottom half of the inning to make it 11-2.

With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 3-2 on the young season and will next square off against Lyndon State College tomorrow at 11am.
