Women's Basketball Struggles Early at Stevenson in ECAC Opener

OWINGS MILLS, MD – The Cavaliers could not overcome a slow start tonight, as the Cabrini women's basketball team suffered a 57-46 loss at Stevenson University in the opening round of the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Tournament.

The loss closes the Blue and White's season with a record of 16-13. Stevenson (18-9) advances to Friday's quarterfinal round, where it will face Misericordia University.

Junior Myonie Williamson paced the Cavaliers with 15 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Nomi Washington scored 15 points to go with seven boards. Freshman Meghan Matthews paired eight points and seven rebounds in her first career start.

Cabrini fell behind early, as it struggled to find its offensive rhythm.  The Mustangs scored the game's first 13 points before Williamson's layup nearly seven minutes into the game.

The Blue and White's struggled continued into the second quarter, as another Williamson bucket marked the team's only points during the first eight minutes of the period.

The Cavaliers found themselves looking up at a 29-10 halftime deficit after shooting just 18.2% from the field and notching 14 turnovers.

The deficit swelled to 21 points in the opening minute of the third quarter, before the Cavaliers began their comeback.

Cabrini continued to chip away at the Stevenson lead, outscoring the Mustangs 20-13 in the period, pulling within 40-30 on a jumper by freshman Cassidy Gallagher late in the third.

Stevenson opened the final period with a 7-1 spurt, extending its lead to 48-31 with eight minutes left in the game.

After scoring just 10 points in the opening 20 minutes, the Blue and White posted 36 second half points and recorded just five turnovers after the break.

Cabrini also forced the Mustangs into 15 second half turnovers, converting them into 14 points.

Sara Tarbert paced Stevenson with 14 points, 25 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals, while Jonyae Curry scored 15 points.
