Softball Scores 1st Win with Victory over Waynesburg

CLERMONT, FL - The Cabrini softball team earned its first win of 2017 as the Blue and White scored an 11-8 win over Waynesburg University following this morning's 6-1 loss to Otterbein University, its second loss to the Cardinals this season. After today's doubleheader, the Cavaliers find themselves at 1-5 on the year.

The Cavaliers struck first against the Cardinals, as freshman Alexandra Schell came home to score after drawing the leadoff walk to open the day's action. Otterbein answered in the bottom half of the first with a run of its own.

After a pair of scoreless innings, the Cardinals scored two runs in the fourth and fifth and one in the sixth to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

The Blue and White tallied seven hits in the loss, with junior Jess Giordano and sophomore Marissa Alpaugh leading the way with two a piece, while senior Taylor Gallagher, junior Chrissy Ferraro and Schell each notched one.

Junior Jenna Rodriguez fell to 0-2 in the circle, after tossing 3.2 innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits and a walk. Junior Emily Smull entered the game in the fourth and was able to pitch out of a jam, forcing the fielder's choice to end the inning. Smull allowed three runs on five hits and recorded a strike out.

The Cabrini offense found life in the nightcap, as five Cavaliers earned an RBI in the win.

The Jackets opened the scoring in the first but the Blue and White answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half to take the 2-1 lead. Schell, who reached on a single to left field, scored on an error by the pitcher, while Alpaugh's single plated Ferraro.

In the bottom of the third, the Cavaliers earned two runs on three hits. Ferraro and Giordano reached base on a pair of singles and both runners scored on senior Lindsay Savar's double to center field.

Cabrini scored five runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 9-1. With two runners on, junior Victoria Hall's single to left field scored junior Alexandria Ramos.

Later in the inning, Alpaugh recorded her second hit of the game as the sophomore's bases loaded double plated Ferraro, Hall and sophomore Taylor Franchville. Alpaugh scored the team's fifth run following an error by the second baseman.

The Jackets rallied for six runs on four hits in the fifth, cutting the Cavalier lead down to a pair of runs.

Ferraro and Alpaugh were able to score once more for the Cavaliers in the sixth, giving the Blue and White an 11-7 lead heading into the final frame.

The Jackets made one last push at a comeback, before falling three runs shy after scoring one run on one hit in the seventh.

Alpaugh went 3-4 at the plate and notched a pair of RBI and two runs scored, while Ferraro went 2-3 and led the team with four runs sored. Giordano earned the win after another strong performance. The junior pitched seven innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits to go along with five strike outs.

Cabrini will close out its spring games in Clermont, FL. tomorrow as the club meets Johnson & Wales University (2-2) and Adrian College (1-5) at 9am and 2pm, respectively.
