RADNOR, PA - It was a tale of two games for the Cavaliers as they picked up a huge 3-2 victory in game one of Saturday's double-header against the reigning CSAC champions and 2016 national runner-up, Keystone Giants. The Giants ended up taking the series, however as they piled on 13 runs in game two to coast to a comfortable 13-3 victory.
Game 1 Recap
The Blue and White played arguably their most complete game to date in game one as they handed a veteran laden Keystone team their first conference loss since April 23, 2016. The Cavaliers defense stepped up and turned in their first game of the season with zero errors to aid pitchers
Ryan Givens and
Andrew Del Giudice.
Making his first start of the season after missing time due to injury, Givens threw an effective three plus innings for the Cavs, as he allowed just four hits, two earned runs and picked up three strikeouts. Del Giudice, who picked up the win, came on in relief of Givens in the top of the fourth in a bases loaded jam with nobody out. The freshman was masterful as he induced a 6-4-3 double play and a routine grounder to
Dylan Butler at third to escape the jam allowing only one run to score and maintaining the lead for the Cavs. Del Giudice finished out the game for the Cavs as he threw four shutout innings and allowed just three hits.
Offense was scarce in game one for both teams, but the Giants struck first as Brady Barr grounded out with the bases loaded to give Keystone the early 1-0 lead.
After a clean top of the second from Givens, the Cavaliers would take the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Tyler Norris got things started with a single up the middle and was moved into scoring position as
Erick Vicario singled through the left side. With runners on first and second and nobody out, Giants starter Dylan Leahy picked up a key double play ball off the bat of
Colin Birzes. Following back-to-back walks of
Joe Aurite and
Alex Del Giudice to load the bases,
Michael Mescia delivered a clutch two out, two RBI single to center to give Cabrini the 2-1 lead.
Butler would push the Cavaliers' lead to 3-1 with a towering homerun to straight away center field; his second home run in his last four games.
As previously mentioned, Keystone picked up their final run of game one in the top of the fourth as they loaded the bases off of Givens, but only managed to push across a single run off Cav's reliever Del Giudice, who traded a double play ball for a run and induced a routine groundout to the third baseman for the final out.
Del Giudice closed out the game for the Cavaliers as the righty faced just two over the minimum the rest of the way, earning plenty of high fives and fist bumps from teammates following a key victory.
Game 2 Recap
As mentioned, it was a tale of two games for the Blue and White as they limped to a 13-3 loss in game two.
Jake Dohar got the nod as the game two starter and pitched much better than his line would indicate. The freshman tossed 3.2 innings and allowed five runs, however only one was earned, but was strapped with his first loss of the season.
Errors played a major role in game two as only six of the Cavaliers 13 runs allowed were earned.
Butler and Norris led the Cavs offensively as they duo combined to go 4-7 with two runs scored, while
Shaun Stackhouse chipped in a hit and a RBI.
The Cavaliers were tied at one a piece, courtesy of a Stackhouse RBI double to center in the third, until the top of the fourth inning.when a throwing error by first baseman
Casey Plunkett allowed a run to score to make it 2-1. A homerun, two doubles and a single in the inning allowed the Giants to push across five more runs to make it 7-2.
Another run in the fifth and four in the sixth inning ballooned the Giants lead to 12-1. The Cavs would pick up two late runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a balk by reliever Yeison Andujar and a heads up play from Norris, who was able to score on the throw to first after a dropped third strike.
The double-header split moves the Cavaliers record to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Despite the Giants taking the three game series, the Blue and White will look to build on their momentum from the weekend as they next travel to Eastern University on Tuesday, March 28. The Cavs faired well against the Eagles in their first matchup as they won by a score of 12-6 and will look for a similar result come Tuesday. Game time is slated for 3:30pm.
