RADNOR, PA - The Cavalers dropped both ends of today's double header against the Marywood Pacers (13-19 overall, 8-10 CSAC), but certainly have plenty to feel good about. Down 17-1 in game one, the Cavs went down fighting as they pushed across six runs in the game's final frame, highlighted by five hits and three extra base hits to chase Marywood's starter one out shy out a complete game.
What game one may have lacked in pitching, game two certainly made up for. Both starters tossed complete games as Cabrini's
Andrew Del Giudice went seven strong innings and allowed just six hits and three earned runs, but was saddled with the tough luck loss as the Cavs fell by a 3-1 final.
Game One: Marywood 17, Cabrini 7
The first three innings featured 12 total runs between both teams, with the Pacers claiming 11 of those. The Cavs pushed across their run in the bottom of the first as
Colin Birzes doubled to right center to plate
Tyler Norris.
Marywood added a single run in the fifth and five in the sixth to take a commanding 17-1 lead heading into the games final frame.
The Blue and White refused to go down quietly, however as
Kevin Glynn started the rally with a walk.
Michael Suosso delivered a huge pinch-hit triple to bring home Glynn and push across the Cavaliers' second run of the game. A walk and steal from
Jake Dohar quickly had the Blue and White back in business with runners on second and third with two outs. A single up the middle from
Jesse James Murphy plated both Suosso and Dohar and brought the lead down to 17-4 in the process. A pinch-hit double from
Vince Gares again set the Cavs up with runners on second and third with two outs. A two RBI single from
Tyler Norris chased Pacers' starter James Goetz from the game and made the score 17-6. Cabrini would push across their final run off on an RBI double from Birzes as they batted around the order and scored six runs in the process.
Goetz earned the win, but not the complete game as the righty came up just one out short. His final line was still impressive, nonetheless as he tossed 6.2 innings and allowed seven runs, six of which came in his final .2 of an inning, on seven hits.
Joseph Schipsi logged 4.1 innings for the Cavs, allowing five earned on 10 hits, to go along with three strikeouts.
Six different Cavaliers recorded at least one hits, highlighted by Norris (2-4, 2R, 2RBI) and Birzes (2-4, 2RBI).
Game Two: Marywood 3, Cabrini 1
Game two featured a pitching dual between Cabrini's Del Giudice and Marywood's Justin Haddix. Haddix ultimately earned the victory, his fourth of the season, but was seemingly matched pitch-for-pitch by Del Giudice.
Neither team managed much offense across the first three innings as Marywood collected two hits, one in the second and third, while the Cavaliers managed just one in the bottom of the first - an infield single from
Shaun Stackhouse.
The Pacers would strike first off of a home run from cleanup hitter Vince Rebar, his second homer of the day, in the top of the fourth to take the early 1-0 lead.
The 1-0 lead would hold steady for the Pacers until the top of the sixth when they added another to make it 2-0 off of an RBI double.
The Cavaliers put together a string of hits in the bottom of the sixth and had momentum on their side. After a double from
Mikayle Holloway and Norris reaching via a fielders choice, the Cavs had runners on second and third with two outs. Birzes stepped in the box and drove a hard single through the right side to score Holloway with Norris right on his heels; a very close play at home, however resulted in Norris being called out as catcher Jake Shuster applied the tag before Norris could touch home. The play at the plate was the innings final out and seemed to swing momentum back in favor of the Pacers.
A pinch hit single from Gares in the bottom of the seventh would stand as the Cavaliers' final hit as they lost a hard fought game by a final score of 3-1.
Del Giudice pitched a strong game as the righty tossed seven innings, giving the bullpen a much deserved break, and allowed just six hits and three earned runs to go along with three strikeouts.
Stackhouse (1-2), Birzes (1-2, 1RBI), Gares (1-1) and Holloway (1-1, 1R) provided the offense for the Blue and White in game two. Birzes finished 4-10 with four RBI and one run scored in the three game series against the Pacers.
The Cavaliers will travel to Cairn on Friday, May 5th for the first game of a three game series against the Highlanders, the Cavs' final series of the season. Game time is scheduled for 3pm.
