How Cabrini Got Here
Cabrini is making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, but its first in 16 years, after earning the CSAC's automatic tournament bid as conference champion.
Head coach
Stephen Parker returned three players from last year's 2-13 squad, but a single-minded championship focus helped the Blue and White improve to 11-5 this year, including 11-2 during the spring campaign and 7-0 in the CSAC.
The Cavaliers are led by two-time CSAC Player of the Year,
Alijah Broadnax and the team's lone senior,
Sean Jaeger. The duo combined to win 18 of their last 20 singles matches at numbers one and two, respectively, while going 12-3 at number one doubles.
Freshmen
Charles LaMantia and
Matthew DeMaria have made an immediate impact on the team, as the duo owns a 13-3 doubles record. Individually, the rookies have combined for 20 wins at numbers three and four, including a perfect 13-0 in CSAC play.
Sophomore
Nick Scaramuzza and freshman
Nick Tilley completed the squad, recording a 6-3 doubles record in the number three flight. Tilley claimed five number five singles victories in his first year playing tennis, while Scaramuzza sports a 7-5 mark at number six singles. Â
How TCNJ Got Here
The Lions received an at-large berth into the tournament after posting a 14-3 campaign. Winners of seven consecutive matched, TCNJ closed the season ranked 13th in the latest NCAA Northeast Regional rankings.
TCNJ faced one of the toughest schedules in the nation, as it faced six regionally ranked teams, going 3-3 in those matches, and scoring an 8-1 win over Div. I Lafayette.
Sophomore Mitchel Sanders and senior Jack August lead the Lions, combining for 35 wins on the season. Occupying the numbers one and two singles flights, the duo joins the team's primary number three player, sophomore Omar Bokhari with matching 13-4 dual match records. Â
Junior Chris D'Agostino, sophomore Tim Gavornik and senior Mike Stanley round out the line-up, with each scoring at least 11 singles wins, including win streaks of at least four each.
Sophomore Matt Puig joins Sanders to complete the club's number one doubles pair, one that despite its 8-5 record has gone 5-5 in its last 10 matches. August and Stanly have been dominant in the number two flight, winning 10 of their 12 matches, while D'Agostino and Gavornik have posted an 8-4 mark at number three.
Cabrini Last Time Out: Cavaliers cruised to a 5-0 win over Immaculata (4/22/17, Philadelphia, PA)
The Blue and White did not drop a point as it cruised to a 5-0 win over Clarks Summit in the CSAC Tournament semifinal and a 5-0 victory over Immaculata in the championship.
Broadnax and Jaeger teamed for an 8-2 win a number one doubles, while DeMaria and LaMantia overcame a 2-0 deficit to score an 8-3 win in the number two match. Cabrini's number three team of Scaramuzza and Tilley completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory.
Needing just two more points to claim the title, the Blue and White continued its run as the day's focus turned to singles play. Jaeger claimed the Cavaliers' first singles point and fourth point of the match, scoring a 6-0, 6-1 win in the number two match. Â
Broadnax and Scaramuzza were on the verge of closing their respective matches, but Broadnax finished first, completing a 6-1, 6-0 win at number one singles, to secure Cabrini's first CSAC title since 2001 and its fourth overall.
