MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Cabrini men's tennis team's season came to an end today, as the Cavaliers suffered a 5-0 loss to The College of New Jersey in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue and White ended its campaign with a record of 11-6, including 11-3 during the spring season, a perfect 7-0 record in Colonial States Athletic Conference action and its first CSAC championship and NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001.
The 2017 campaign also marked an incredible turnaround by head coach
Stephen Parker and the Cavaliers, after the team went 2-13 in 2015-16.
Today's match also closed the career of Cabrini's lone senior,
Sean Jaeger. In two seasons, Jaeger earned three All-CSAC awards and posted 15 singles and 19 doubles victories.
The Cavaliers fell behind early, as the Lions captured all three doubles matches.
Jaeger and number one doubles partner junior
Alijah Broadnax suffered an 8-0 loss, as did the number three trio of sophomore
Nick Scaramuzza and freshman
Nick Tilley.
In the number two match, freshman pair
Matthew DeMaria and
Charles LaMantia suffered an 8-1 setback.
The Cavaliers looked to mount a comeback in singles play, but a strong TCNJ club needed just two singles victories to advance.
DeMaria lost his number four match 6-0, 6-0, while Scaramuzza's 6-0, 6-1 loss in the number six flight ended the match.
With today's win, TCNJ (15-3) secured a spot in tomorrow's second round, where it will face Liberty League champion Skidmore (15-5) tomorrow at 8:30am.
