LANCASTER, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end this afternoon, as it suffered a 17-7 loss at No. 5 Franklin & Marshall College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The loss ended the Cavaliers season with a 16-4 overall record, tied for most wins in program season.
It also ended the careers of Cabrini's eight seniors,
Megan Barlow,
Jess Breuning,
Shannon Fichter,
Jen Robinson,
Lisa Saraceni,
Maureen Sullivan,
Allie Vallen and
Sasha Wozniak.
Among the most successful classes in program history, the group led the Blue and White to 58 wins, including a perfect 35-0 record in CSAC action, four conference championships and two NCAA Tournament wins.
In a game that was much closer than the final score, the Cavaliers fell behind 5-2 but didn't allow the Diplomats to pull away. Sophomore
Liz Hoeffner's goal with eight seconds left in the first half pulled Cabrini to within 9-6 at the break.
Following an F&M goal, Breuning's second goal of the day cut the Blue and White deficit back to three goals with 25:33 to play. Unfortunately, it was the last goal of the season for the Cavaliers, as the Diplomats scored five goals in a six minute span to seal the victory.
Breuning and Hoeffner paced the Cabrini attack with two goals each, while Vallen paired a goal and two assists. Wozniak and sophomore
Avery Murphy added a goal and an assist each.
The Blue and White recorded a season low nine ground balls, with Wozniak, junior
Jackie Neary and sophomore
Katie Kucia scooping two each. Murphy and junior
Gabby Lee controlled three draw each, while Kucia accounted for two of Cabrini's six caused turnovers.
Barlow faced a season high 45 shots and recorded a season high 13 saves in the loss.
The Blue and White built an early lead, as Wozniak and Hoeffner scored in the game's first minute. F&M wasted little time with its response, netting five unanswered goals. A Cabrini timeout allowed the club to regroup, as Murphy and Breuning marked the scoring column, cutting the deficit to 5-4 midway through the first half.
A Diplomats' goal re-established a two goal cushion before Vallen's goal at the 10:06 mark pulled Cabrini within one goal again. F&M pushed its lead to 9-5 over the next few minutes, netting three unanswered goals before Hoeffner's second goal beat the halftime buzzer.
Cabrini's 45-24 shot deficit marked its largest of the season, while today's action also marked the first time this season that the team failed to convert a fee position shot.
Seniors Gabby Frank and Siobhan Burke joined junior Paige Moriarty and Maddie Hughes with three goals each for the Diplomats (17-4), while junior goaltender Danielle Harrington notched six saves.
With today's win, F&M advances to next weekend's third round, where it will face No. 10 Trinity (15-4).
