RADNOR, PA - The Cavaliers dropped the final two games of their season this afternoon, as the Cairn Highlanders took game one by a 10-2 final and game two by a 14-1 final. The Blue and White faced solid pitching from top to bottom from the Highlanders, who gave up a total of three runs and 11 hits across 14 innings.
Game One: Cabrini 2, Cairn 10
The Blue and White racked up eight hits in game one, but had to settle for just two runs as the aforementioned Highlanders' pitching was able to limit the damage.
Six different players picked up at least one hit for the Cavs, highlighted by
Colin Birzes who finished the game 2-4 with an RBI and a double, as well as
Joe Aurite who reached base three times after going 2-2 with a walk.
Joseph Schipsi got the nod as the starter for game one and tossed six innings, giving up 13 hits and eight runs (six earned) on the day. All eight runs were scored in the first and sixth innings for the Highlanders, as Schipsi allowed seven hits, but no runs in innings two through five.
After a four run top of the first for the Highlanders, the Cavs responded with two runs in their half of the inning thanks to an RBI single through the left side from Birzes followed by
Tyler Norris scoring on a close double-play ball off the bat of
Alex Del Giudice to make it 4-2.
Both teams held steady until the top of the sixth when Cairn pushed across four runs on four hits, highlighted by a two RBI double off the bat of Daniel Morales.
Cairn would tack on two more in the top of the seventh to cap the scoring at 10-2.
Aaron Takacs paced the Highlanders' offense in game one as the sophomore finished 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Game Two: Cabrini 1, Cairn 14
Game two featured an outstanding effort from Highlander starter John Burlaga who threw a complete game, giving up three hits and one run in the process.
The Cavaliers' three hits came off the bats of Norris (1-1, 2B, 2BB),
Vince Gares (1-2, 1BB) and
Kevin Glynn (1-2, 1R, 1BB).
Cairn struck first in the top of the second off of an RBI double from Brendan Keller.
The Blue and White evened things at one apiece after Glynn led off the inning with a walk and quickly moved into scoring position after Aurite grounded out to short. A wild pitch and squeeze bunt later, courtesy of
Michael Mescia, had the Cavs back even with the Highlanders.
Unfortunately, it would be all Highlanders the rest of the way as they added seven runs in the third, one in the fourth and five in the sixth to eventually take it by a 14-1 final.
The Cavaliers certainly would have hoped for a better ending to their inaugural campaign, but have plenty to build upon moving forward. Statistical team leaders include Norris, who finished the season as the team leader in a number of offensive categories, including batting average (.365), runs (25), and hits (35), while Butler finished with the team lead in slugging percentage (.495), RBI's (23), home runs (6) and total bases (55). Stackhouse claimed the stolen base title as the speedy freshman collected 16 on the season.
The Blue and White have no graduating seniors as well and will undoubtedly return significant talent and experience to their 2018 squad.
