RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with its highest offensive output of the season, as the Cavaliers topped Gwynedd Mercy University 3-0 today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The win improved the Blue and White to 9-6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic East Conference. With one conference match remaining in the regular season, the Cavaliers stand in second place in the league standings.
Prior to the game, the Cavaliers honored their four seniors,
Vince Biche,
Jared Irwin,
Matt Ochman and
Sal Zampirri Jr. As a group this class has led Cabrini to 76 victories, including a 26-5-1 mark in conference play and the 2015 and 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference championships.
The seniors led the Cavaliers in today's victory, accounting for 10 shots and a pair of goals.
Zampirri was the first to mark the score sheet, as junior
Kostas Slikas found him on a 20th minute throw-in to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Despite outshooting the Griffins 12-1 and recording the only three corner kicks of the half, the Blue and White could not extend its lead.
The lead remained 1-0 until the 70th frame when freshman
Nick Booth's free kick service found Ochman for his third goal of the campaign. Just six minutes later, Cabrini extended its cushion.
Sophomore
John Griffin's pass inside the penalty area hit freshman
Beck Lindsay in stride, as the rookie notched his first career tally.
The Cavaliers controlled the day's action, outshooting Gwynedd Mercy 27-3, including 11-0 in shots on goal, and recording each of the game's six corner kicks.
Booth and Zampirri led Cabrini with three shots each, one more than Irwin and Ochman. Junior
Mike Gould and freshman
Aaron Toepfer combined for the shutout without being called on for a save.
Junior Kace Peters recorded eight saves for Gwyned Mercy (0-15-1, 0-5-1 Atlantic East).
The Cavaliers will close the regular season on home turf on Wednesday, as they welcome Immaculata University (8-8-1, 3-2 Atlantic East) to Edith Robb Dixon Field. Game time is set for 7pm.
