Women's Soccer Upset Bid Falls Short in NCAA Opening Round

BALTIMORE, MD - The Cabrini women's soccer team went toe to toe with the No. 4 ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in Saturday's NCAA opening round game, but ultimately saw their upset bid fall short as the hosting Blue Jays escaped with a 3-1 final.

Sophomore keeper Ashley Tutzauer had a career day as she anchored the Cabrini defense with a career best 15 saves. The Toms River, NJ native faced a total of 32 shots, including 18 shots on frame, from a relentless Hopkins attack.

Classmate Alex Garces led the Cavs with a pair of shots, including the first Cabrini NCAA tournament goal since 2003 against Mary Washington. Garces' sixth goal of the season came in the 53rd minute courtesy of a beautiful pass over the top from junior Katelyn Gilinger. The goal cut a 2-0 Hopkins' lead in half and briefly swung momentum in favor of the Blue and White.

A shot from JHU's Emily Maheras ten minutes later began to swing the pendulum back in favor of the hosts, however, as the Blue Jays tallied clean shots in the 64th, 66th, 67th, and 68th minute, all of which were denied by Tutzauer.

Another Manheras attempt in the 70th minute, however found pay dirt past the outstretched arms of Tutzauer.

Holding a 3-1 lead with 20 minutes to play, Hopkins transitioned to a more defensive game plan as they limited the Cabrini attack to just a single shot and one corner kick the rest of the way.

Hopkins' Michelle Santangelo paced the Blue Jays with seven shots, including five on goal, while also opening the scoring in the 18th minute. Sophomore's Maria Hagan and Brianna Blair, as well as junior Diana VanSickle, each recorded one shot for the Blue and White.

Following today's action, Cabrini closed their season with a 10-6-1 overall record, while Johns Hopkins improved to 18-2. JHU will advance to Sunday's second round game where they'll face the winner of Rowan and No. 9 Misericordia.
