SCRANTON, PA – Despite being tied at 74 with just over four minutes to play, the Cavaliers could not overcome a Scranton team that shot nearly 74% from the field in the second half.
Cabrini's 90-80 road loss dropped the Blue and White to 2-3 overall, while the Royals improved to 5-0.
Senior
Anthony Wright-Downing led three Cavaliers in double figures with 26 points, including 19 in the second half. Sophomores
Trey Smith and
DJ Smith added 15 points each, draining 8-18 from three point range.
The Cavaliers led for much of a first half that saw 10 lead changes and four ties. Cabrini led by as many as five points midway through the opening stanza, but a 6-0 Scranton run gave the Royals a 32-27 led with three minutes left in the first half.
Cabrini evened the score at 34 but surrendered the final four points of the half, as Scranton carried a 38-34 lead into the break.
The second half played much like the first, with 10 more lead changes and five ties. The Blue and White regained a lead early in the half, on a jumper from senior
Ivan Robinson.
Scranton regained the lead and pushed their advantage to 63-55 with nine minutes to play after back to back three point plays.
The Blue and White battled back to tie the score at 65 with 7:39 to play. The lead swung back and forth over the next few minutes, as the scoreboard leveled at 67 and 69.
Sophomore
Billy Warren's bucket gave Cabrini a 74-73 lead at the 4:32 mark, but the Royals responded with a 9-0 spurt to gain control of the game.
Back to back Wright-Downing lay-ups pulled the Cavaliers to within 82-78 with 1:40 to play, but again Scranton had an answer, netting six consecutive points to pull away.
Freshman
Voshon Mack added nine points for the Cavaliers, while Robinson finished with seven points and five assists.
Trey Smith led the team with six dimes, while Wright-Downing grabbed a team high seven boards.
Matthew Mancuso paired 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Royals, while Kyle DeVerna added 20 points.
Cabrini will make its Atlantic East Conference debut on Saturday, as the Cavaliers visit Gwynedd Mercy (3-3) in the league opener for both teams. The ball will go up at 3pm.
