Men's Soccer Falls in Atlantic East Championship Match

ASTON, PA – The Cabrini men's soccer team's championship quest came to an end today, as the Cavaliers suffered a 3-1 loss to top seeded Neumann in today's Atlantic East Conference championship match.

The loss closes the Cavaliers' season with an 11-7-1 overall record.

It also marked the final appearance in the Blue and White for the team's four seniors, Vince Biche, Jared Irwin, Matt Ochman and Sal Zampirri Jr. As a class, they have led Cabrini to 49 victories, including the 2015 and 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) titles.

The Knights were on the attack from the opening whistle, putting the Cavaliers on their heels. Neumann's pressure paid off in the 16th minute, as sophomore Marlon Trejo's floater beat Cabrini's sophomore goaltender Anthony Zampirri for the day's first goal.

Neumann doubled its lead seven minutes later, as sophomore Ainsley Reid's forehead connected with freshman Gavin Ford's crossing pass in the 23rd minute.

The Knights carried their 2-0 lead into the halftime break after outshooting the Blue and White 9-5.

The Cavaliers found some offensive rhythm in the second half, building a 9-3 advantage in second half shots.

The Blue and White's pressure paid dividends in the 80th minute, when a Neumann hand ball resulted in a penalty kick chance for the Cavaliers. Irwin stepped to the penalty spot and deposited the ball into the left side of the net.

The Cavaliers continued to press for the game-tying goal, but the Knights sprung a counterattack in the 86th minute that sealed the title for Neumann.

Following a Cabrini set piece, a Ford pass sent Nick Testa on a breakaway for the game's final tally.

The Cavaliers outshot Neumann 14-12 on the day, including 6-5 in shots on goal, and forced six corner kicks to just four for the Knights.

Irwin accounted for three of the team's 14 shots, two more than junior Derrick Amoako and freshman Nick Booth.  Zampirri finished the day with a pair of saves.
