RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team scored its first opening day victory since 2012 today, as it held on for a 17-15 win over the visiting Ursinus College Bears. The win also marked the Blue and White's first over Ursinus since 2015.
The Cavaliers' junior duo of
Avery Murphy and
Liz Hoeffner controlled the Cabrini offense, combining for 13 goals in the win.
Murphy scored a game-high seven goals to go with 10 draw controls, while Hoeffner paired six goals and an assist.
Freshman
Taylor Dimmerling connected on a pair of free position shots, while senior
Emily Crouse and sophomore
Lauren Hughes also marked the scoring column.
Senior
Jackie Neary posted eight draw controls and five caused turnovers and joined junior
Emma Rodner-Tims with three ground balls.
Junior goaltender
Devon Scharf added a game-high five ground balls, caused two turnovers and recorded five saves to earn her first career victory in her first career start.
The Bears opened the scoring just 92 seconds into the 2018 season, but the Cavaliers responded with three unanswered goals and never relinquished its lead. Cabrini's lead swelled to 8-3 with 13:13 left in the first half, as Murphy, Hoeffner and Crouse combined for score four goals in a span of 1:37.
The Blue and White led by as many as six goals in the first half, as Dimmerling's free position goal pushed the lead to 10-4, but a pair of Ursinus goals pulled the Bears to within 10-6 at the half.
Cabrini never allowed Ursinus to to find its rhythm before the break, as it outshot the Bears 19-12 and controlled 12 of the 17 draws in the first half.
Whatever momentum the Bears could not finds in the first half, they found at the half, as Ursinus opened the second stanza with three consecutive goals. The Cavaliers had an answer, as they responded with four unanswered goals to regain the five goal cushion at 14-9 with 20 minutes to play.
Back to back Ursinus goals cut Cabrini's lead back to 14-11 before Dimmerling, Hoeffner and Murphy reeled off four straight goals to build a seemingly insurmountable 17-11 lead with just 6:33 to play.
A late Cabrini penalty gave Ursinus the opening it needed, as the Bears rallied for two goals in its two minute man advantage. The Bears continued their scoring run with two goals in the final minutes, but the Blue and White lead proved to be too great to complete the comeback.
Junior Abby Goldstein led the Bears with six goals and an assist, while senior Franny Liberatoscioli and junior Emily DiGiorgio scored four goals each. Junior goaltender Kaitlyn France posted eight saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will head south for their next contest, as Cabrini will face Capital University in St. Petersburg, FL on Monday. Game time is scheduled for 10am.
