Radnor, PA - The Cabrini men's basketball team capped an action packed Saturday as they claimed the second Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship of the day with their 89-76 victory over rival Neumann.
Today's victory marks the first CSAC title for the Blue and White since the 2013-14 season and their 14th overall.
Junior
Anthony Wright-Downing led the way for the Cavaliers as he tallied a career and game high 32 points on 14-of-15 from the field. The Philadelphia native added six rebounds, five steals and three blocks as well. Sophomore
Keith Blassingale finished with 18 points, while senior
Tyheim Monroe picked up another double double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Classmate
Deryl Bagwell narrowly missed a double double as the senior tallied 11 rebounds and eight assists to go along with six points.
The visiting Knights jumped out with the early lead as a pair of threes from senior Billy Cassidy sparked a 12-to-4 run for Neumann just five minutes into the action. A layup from Monroe followed by a layup and trey from Blassingale quickly gave the lead back to the Blue and White.
Up 20-16, the Cavaliers used a 7-to-0 run to push the lead to double digits with 9:45 left in the half. Neumann would again respond as they ripped off a 14-to-3 run, highlighted by back-to-back threes from sophomore Raquan Brown-Johnson, to trim the Cabrini lead back to just 33-30. The Blue and White would push their lead back to six points heading into the intermission as Wright-Downing finished a tough layup with just over a minute left.
The Cavs opened the second half with a 9-to-2 run to push their lead to 51-38 thanks to a pair of threes from freshman
DJ Smith. Neumann would twice trim the Cavs lead back to just two points, with the last coming at the 12 minute mark, but a 20-to-6 run that spanned nearly five minutes would end any hopes of a comeback.
The Blue and White would push their lead to a game high 17 points off a layup from sophomore
Brett Foster with 4:44 to play. With a comfortable lead in hand, the Cavaliers were able to coast to the eventual 89-76 final and secure the program's 14th conference title.
By virtue of the league's automatic bid, the Blue and White will make their 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament after tonight's victory. The Cavs will find out who they play on Monday, February 26th during the NCAA Selection Show at 12:30pm.
