Scranton, PA - For just the second time in program history, the Cabrini women's basketball team will advance to the NCAA Second Round after tonight's 65-52 victory over Brooklyn College.
Freshman
Kate Lannon powered the Cavs offense, particularly in the second half, as the rookie tallied a game high 18 points with 13 coming after the intermission. Junior
Nomi Washington had the hot hand in the first half as she dropped 13 points in the opening 20 minutes and finished just behind Lannon with 17 points. Sophomore
Meghan Matthews picked up her sixth double-double of the season as she paired 11 points and 12 rebounds, while senior
Sabrina Hackendorn narrowly missed a double double of her own as she finished with seven points and nine boards.
The defense for the Blue and White held one of the nation's top players in check all night as Brooklyn senior guard Karen Mak managed just 16 points and five rebounds on 6-of-18 from the field. Mak was one of just 21 players in all of DIII women's basketball to record a triple double this season.
The defensive effort didn't stop with Mak, however as they allowed the Bulldogs to shoot just 30.8 percent from the field and held a distinct 50-35 advantage in rebounds.
After an even first quarter in which both teams scored just 10 points, the Cavaliers ripped off a 15-to-3 run that spanned just over five minutes to grab a 25-13 lead. Back-to-back-to-back threes from Lannon and Washington (2) pushed the Cavs' lead to 31-16, before layups from Washington and Matthews capped the half with the Blue and White leading 35-18.
In total the Cavaliers outscored the Bulldogs 25-8 in the second quarter and allowed just three made field goals.
The Cavs added to their lead in the third as they headed into the final stanza with a 53-35 lead. Cabrini would balloon their lead to a game high 21 points with 9:43 left in the fourth thanks to trey from sophomore
Cassidy Gallagher.
The Bulldogs would mount a late comeback attempt as they cut the Cabrini lead to just 11 points with 2:35 to play, but it would prove to be too little, too late as the Cavs would fend off the late rally and push their lead back to 13 points for the eventual 65-52 final.
With the win Cabrini improves to 26-2 overall and will take on familiar foe Scranton in tomorrow's NCAA Second Round matchup. The Cavs last played the Royals on November, 29th when they were edged by a 57-41 final. Tomorrow's game time is slated for 5pm.
