CLERMONT, FL – The Cabrini softball team closed its spring break trip to Florida with a 1-3 mark over its final two days. The four games included a trio of one-run games and an eight inning loss, as the Cavaliers returned north with a 3-5 overall record.
In Thursday's opener, the Cavaliers recorded just one run on four hits through six innings before the club rallied in the top of the seventh. Trailing Hanover 4-1, Cabrini erupted for five unearned runs and six total runs. After its rally, the Blue and White moved to the bottom of the seventh with a 7-4 lead.
Unfortunately, Cabrini could not hold its lead, as freshman
Casey Scheuren failed to record an out in relief. Hanover rallied for four runs on six hits to down the Blue and White 8-7.
Senior
Victoria Hall led Cabrini with three hits in the loss, while classmate
Jess Giordano drove in two runs.
The Cavaliers rallied in the nightcap, scoring a thrilling 6-5 nine inning win over Houghton. Cabrini scored a pair of runs in the first and three in the fourth to build a 5-1 lead through five innings.
Houghton plated two in the sixth and two in the seventh to even the score. The Cavaliers could not respond in the bottom of the frame, sending the game to extra innings.
Neither team reached the plate in the eighth, but the Cavaliers took advantage of their speed in the bottom of the ninth.
Senior
Alexandria Ramos started the inning on second before stealing third. Classmate
Emily Smull drew a walk and stole second. Junior
Marissa Alpaugh also drew a walk to load the bases, before Ramos stole home to end the game.
Senior
Chrissy Ferraro went 4-5 on the day with two runs scored and two RBI, while Giordano paired three hits and three RBI. Giordano also allowed three earned runs with six strikeouts through six innings, before Smull pitched the final three to earn the victory.
The Cavaliers struggled to find their footing against Alma on its final day of action. Cabrini failed to record a hit through the game's first innings and trailed 9-0. Senior
Sarah Beckner and sophomore
Carolyn Alcantara recorded the Blue and White's lone hits and run.
The Blue and White has the offense going early in its final game of the trip, as Cabrini broke open a 1-1 tie in the top of the second inning against York (PA). Ferraro's three RBI triple keyed a seven run second inning, giving Cabrini a seemingly comfortable 8-1 lead.
Freshman
Amber Seamen's RBI double extended the lead to 9-1 in the fourth, but York rallied for five runs in the bottom of the frame before tying the score with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Neither team crossed the plate in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
Cabrini stranded a runner on third in the top of the eighth before York scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the frame.
Alpuagh led the Blue and White with three base hits, while Seamen and classmate
Olivia Young recorded two each.
The Cavaliers will return north to face Eastern University (4-2) on Tuesday, March 13, in the annual Battle for Eagle Road. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm on Eastern's St. Davids campus.
