Chester, PA - The Cabrini baseball team dropped a nonconference matchup to the Widener Pride this afternoon despite a four RBI day from sophomore
Vince Gares.
Gares used a two run homer in the seventh to highlight his big day, but it would prove not enough as the hosting Pride responded with five runs in the top of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Senior
Brett Kuchera and freshman
JD Barrett tallied a hit each and combined to score three runs for the Blue and White, while junior
Tyler Norris and senior
Dylan Butler split the remaining two hits.
The Cavs turned to sophomore
Jake Dohar on the bump who lasted 3.2 innings, surrendering four earned on seven hits.
Dohar was opposed by Widener's Matthew Guarino who had allowed just five hits and three earned runs until Gares' two run shot in the seventh. He would ultimately finish out the seventh inning and secure his second victory of the season.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 3-2 lead midway through the fourth inning, courtesy of a bases loaded balk followed by a two RBI single from Gares.
The Cavalier lead would stop there, however, as Widener responded with three runs of their own to retake the lead at 4-3 and chase Dohar in the process.
The Pride took advantage of the Cavalier bullpen, scoring a total of seven runs in just 3.1 innings to push their lead to the eventual 11-5 final. A three run home run from Widener's Stephen DeBellis in the eighth inning put an exclamation point on the Pride's 17th win of the season.
Following today's action, the Blue and White move to 15-16 overall, but hold steady at 4-6 in the conference play. They will look to strengthen their playoff push when they travel to Centenary University this Saturday, April 28th for a double header. First pitch is slated for noon.
