Philadelphia, PA - Under the guidance of head coach
Stephen Parker, the Cabrini men's tennis team has claimed their second consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship this evening following a 5-0 victory over the No. 2 seeded Clarks Summit Defenders.Â
The Defenders earned their way to the championship round following a 5-2 victory over the No. 3 seeded Neumann University Knights in yesterday's semifinal and were set for a rematch with the Blue and White following an 9-0 loss during the regular season.Â
The Cavs had other plans, however, as they opened the championship round with a sweep of doubles play. Senior
Alijah Broadnax and sophomore
CJ LaMantia led things off with a decisive 8-2 victory over Summit's Nathan Hubbard and Noah Macey in flight No. 1.Â
The sophomore duo of
Nick Falcone and Vice Paetow doubled the team's lead as they edged their Defender counterparts by way of an 8-4 decision, while sophomores
Nick Tilley and
Matthew DeMaria followed suit with an 8-4 victory of their own in the No. 3 slot.Â
LaMantia, the 2018 CSACÂ Player of the Year, made quick work of Summit's Evan Griffen in singles flight No. 2, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 decision to push the Cavs' team lead to 4-0.Â
Needing just one more team point, rookie Chuckwuma Duru rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 slot to capture the championship for the Cavs.Â
As mentioned, the victory gave the Cavaliers their second consecutive CSAC championship, marking just the second time a men's tennis team has won back-to-back conference championships in program history dating back to the 2000 and 2001 seasons.Â
By virtue of the league's automatic bid, the Blue and White have secured a spot in the 2018 NCAA men's tennis championships following tonight's victory. Continue to follow CabriniAthletics.com to find out who and where the Cavaliers will play in the NCAA First Round.Â
