West Lawn, PA - The Cabrini baseball team saw their season come to a close this afternoon after falling to the Neumann University Knights on day two of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tournament.
The Knights scored four runs across the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take the lead from the Cavs en route to the eventual 7-5 final.
Freshman
Ray Lutick was ultimately saddled with the loss after tossing five innings and allowing five runs. Junior
Tyler Ronayne logged three innings of relief and held the Knights' offense in check, allowing just a lone unearned run.
Lutick was opposed by Neumann's Phil Sanborn who went the distance for his squad. The freshman scattered nine hits and allowed three earned to pick up his third victory of the season.
Cabrini had Sanborn on the ropes early as they pushed across three runs in the first inning. The Blue and White were rolling following a fly out from junior
Tyler Norris, as freshman
JD Barrett, senior
Brett Kuchera and freshman
Mack McKisson all singled to load the bases with one out.
An error from Neumann's second baseman off a sharply hit ball from sophomore
Vince Gares allowed Kuchera and Barrett to score and give the Cavs the early 2-0 lead. An RBI single to right off the bat of senior
Dylan Butler plated the Cavs' third run of the inning.
The Knights would even things at three in the second inning, however, as a two RBI double from Dan Padilla highlighted the frame.
The Blue and White would again retake the lead in the fourth following a two out walk from Butler and an RBI triple from Norris.
One run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh gave the Knights the 7-4 lead and a few insurance runs. With one out in the ninth, sophomore
Joe Aurite drilled a deep fly ball over the left center field fence to cut the lead to 7-5.
Sanborn would settle and retire the next two batters, putting an unfortunate end to the Diamond Cavs season.
The Blue and White finished their season with a 20-19 overall record, twice as many wins as last season, and a 9-7 mark in conference play.
